Austen's thoughts

Ally's thoughts

Jamie's thoughts

The next day was harder. When they saw each other, it was tense, no one wanting to admit their fault. Ally passed Jamie and Austen in the halls, avoiding all eye contact. Jamie huffed and went on her way, though Austen made a considerable effort to get to know her. Austen was starting to be distant with everyone at and after lunch.

That morning

Ally walked down the halls, determined to make peace with Austen and Jamie. Austen was leaning on the wall, Jamie next to him, looking bored and perhaps a bit irritated.

"Ally, hey!" Austen smiled and waved. Jamie only rolled her eyes, crossed her arms and looked away. It was almost too much. Losing her composure, she looked at the ground.

"Al!" Lucy called from behind her. "Can you believe that he has the nerve to talk to you again?" She lowered her voice, though it was still noticeably loud enough for Austen to hear.

"Uh, yeah," she replied, a bit uncomfortable. "The nerve." Lucy put her arm over her sister's shoulders and leaned in.

"Reputation is everything, Al. Don't let your feelings mess with that." Straightening her poster and lifting her head, she continued walking, ignoring the small voice in her head crying out for her to smile at Austen and talk to Jamie. She kept walking, even though she knew it wasn't right. She couldn't look at Austen as she passed.

His smile fell and turned to a frown when Jamie pushed past him, not saying a word. He tried to be friendly and it all turned against him. Jamie seemed to hate him and Ally didn't want anything to do with him. What's a guy to do?

Jamie walked down the hall feeling kind of bad. She didn't mean to be so old to him, but she couldn't help it. How could he stand there and pretend that he hadn't ignored her for the entirety of two years. But she couldn't help but think that maybe he hadn't meant to. Maybe he changed, actually felt bad.

Her anger came back full blast as her thought process continued. That Ally hadn't changed. She was still a self centered little Barbie that only cared if her lip gloss matched her shoes. Why do people worship people like her? Don't they see that her every move is planned, her words thought over a million times to persuade and win them over?

The bell rang for class, so Jamie and those around her hurried for first period.

Maybe someday things will be different

Lunch

Austen, Ally and Jamie realized that their regular seats were actually quite close to each other as they each sat down, catching sight of the other two just tables away. To Austen's disappointment, Jamie retrieved her things and left, her untouched food left on the tables.

Ally turned her back and ignored his smile. Many of his fellow football players asked him if he was okay, but he just pushed away his food and rested his head on top of his arms. Soon he became lost in thought.

Did I do something wrong? All I did was tell the truth. I stood up for Jamie. Was I not supposed to?

He sighed and closed his eyes. His friends looked at him, worried. He had never acted this way before. "Dude, what's wrong." His friend, Keith, whom he had know all most his entire life, broke through his thoughts.

"Nothing. Just thinking." He didn't sound at all convincing, his disappointment seeping into his every word. Keith gave him a look that told him that he wasn't buying it. "Just these girls. They don't seem to like each other, and I'm just trying to be a good guy, but they keep brushing me off."

"So stop being the good guy. Ignore them. After all, if they don't see how great of a guy you are, then screw 'em." Austen gave him a slight smile.

"I think that's the total opposite of what they want, dude." They laughed. Ally looked his way but quickly made it seem as if she was scanning the other tables for someone much more important.

"So, you good." Austen looked at him, determined to be convincing.

"Yeah, I'm good."

That afternoon.

They each opened their lockers to find a slip of paper with a single question on it.

If you were trapped in a room with anyone for 24 hours, who would you pick and why?

It wasn't signed, but they knew exactly who it was from.

Austen

Any one to be trapped in a room with? I would pick Ally. I want to know what her problem is. I didn't do anything to her. I told her the truth and she chose to hate me. I try to be nice and she ignores me.

WHAT IS HER PROBLEM?!

Or maybe I'd pick Jamie. Same reason. I stood up for her and she's avoiding me like the plague. She could have had the living crap beat out of her- though I do believe she could do some REAL damage. Why won't she talk to me?

I just want to be their friend. Is there something wrong with me?

Austen couldn't sleep that night. He kept on thinking over the day. Is there something wrong with me?  That night, in the lonely hours of the morning, he cried himself to sleep.

Ally

Jamie. I choose Jamie. What can I say, she's interesting. Pretty, brave. My God, what am I thinking?? She's just a brash girl who upset and hurt Lucy! But maybe Lucy deserved it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I don't know anymore! And what the actual HELL do I do about Jamie!!!!!!!

Jamie

Ally. She may be a plastic bitch but she's cute. Maybe she could tell me what goes through her head, not that I wonder what she's thinking about! But when she's in public. Why is she so fake? Why stand up for her sister when she was in the wrong?

Does she have a boyfriend? Girlfriend?

Shit, I mean obviously. Who wouldn't want to date her. Not that I want to, but GAH! Forget it! Ally. because I want to study her. My God! Even that sounds terrible.

I DO NOT LIKE ALLY!

Ally and Jamie went to bed confused. They didn't know what to think. Maybe the other wasn't that bad.
