I sat outside the church, watching the stars silently. Johnny was sitting beside me, resting his head on my shoulder as we shared a cigarette. I could feel him shivering softly as he went to hand me the cigarette.
"I know it's cold Johnny, you can go lay down inside if you'd like." I whispered softly.
"No. I'm fine Pony, it's just a little chilly. I like watching the stars with you man." Johnny whispered softly as he snuggled in closer to me. I smiled softly as he loosely draped my arm around him, pulling him in closer to my body, hoping to share some of my heat with him. He let out a content sigh as he looked up to the sky again.
"This is peaceful..." Johnny whispered as he yawned softly.
"Yeah... It really is." I hummed softly as he looked down at Johnny. "Getting tired there?"
"I'm fine..." Johnny muttered softly as he rested his head on my shoulder. "I've been thinking..."
"Oh," I glanced over to Johnny once more. "About what?"
"Us." He yawned softly again as he rubbed his eyes softly.
"What about us...?" I asked, my mood dropping suddenly as my shoulders slumped.
"I like you Pony." Johnny spoke as he softly sat up pulling away from me softly. "I like you a lot. I guess you could say that maybe it's love..." I felt my cheeks heat up softly as I watched Johnny light up another cigarette and take a long drag.
"I uh..." I tried.
"I get it if you don't feel the same man..." Johnny sighed softly as he rose to his feet slowly and moved to retreat back into the church.
"Wait!" I cried as he quickly grabbed his hand, pulling him to a stop and shooting up to my feet. "I... I really like you too... I..." I bit my bottom lip before I sighed, giving in and leaning forward, capturing Johnny's soft lips against my own.
"I think I love you too..." I whispered as we broke away. Johnny was bright red and he looked away, softly touching his lips.
"I'm glad we're on the same page..." Johnny whispered softly with a smile dancing on his lips.
"Let's head inside. Don't want us catching a cold or anything." I smiled softly as I softly took a hold of his hand. We walked inside and went to our small pile of blankets we had made in the back corner of the church. Johnny sat down in the pile first and I silently sat down next to him, snuggling in close.
"What's the gang gonna say...?" I muttered softly.
"Nothing they won't know. We'll hide it from them..." Johnny said softly as he yawned again softly. I laid down silently, dragging Johnny down with me. He chuckled softly as he snuggled up into my chest softly, taking in a deep breath.
"Goodnight, Pony..." Johnny whispered softly.
"Goodnight, Johnny." I whispered back softly. He smiled softly as he nuzzled in closer to me silently. We both fell into a peaceful sleep that night.
A toe nudged me in the ribs. "Glory," said a rough but familiar voice, "he looks different with his hair like that."
I rolled over and sat up, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes and yawned. Suddenly I blinked.
"Hey, Dallas!"
Hey, Ponyboy!" He grinned down at me. "Or should I say Sleeping Beauty?"
I looked around and saw Johnny sitting on one of the benches, smiling softly at me. I smiled back as I rose to my feet and stretched.
The next week was the hardest week I'd ever felt in my entire life. I had lost Johnny and Dallas in the same night. I held the book tightly in my hand as my hands shook softly. He bit back tears as he stared up at the ceiling.
"Ponyboy...?" Sodapop asked softly as he stepped into the dark bedroom slowly. "Is everything alright?"
I looked over to my brother as tears welled up in my eyes.
"It should've been me..." I choked out.
"What...?" Soda asked softly as he stepped closer to me slowly. "Stop talking like that... Darry and I wouldn't be able to handle losing you too..."
"But it's true!" I cried. "It should have been me! I should have gotten Johnny out of that church! If I never ran into that church he wouldn't have followed me! If I never decided to run away, Johnny wouldn't be dead! I-It was all my fault! Johnny is dead and it should have been me!"
I watched Sodas eyes water as he moved forward and yanked me into a tight embrace as I sobbed hard into his chest. He softly ran his fingers through my hair as I just sobbed harder.
"Please. God please stop talking like that Pony..." Soda whimpered softly into my hair.
Darry stood in the doorway and softly tapped on the door frame to alert us that he was there too.
"Is everything alright in here?" He asked softly as he slowly stepped into the room. I choked back another weak sob as I clung to Sodapop.
"I want to die..." I sobbed softly. This caught Darry's attention as he frowned and walked up closer to me and Soda, pulling the two of us into a warm embrace.
"Hey, it'll be okay, kid." He said softly into my hair.
(So this is the first of the many re-writes and I'm very proud of it! There are a few lines taken from the book in here mostly just when Dallas gets the boys so enjoy this lovely short story!)
