chapter 2: first day

The next morning

Juice by Lizzo blasted from my alarm causing me to groan before slamming my hand on the button to make it stop. I slowly rolled to the side of the bed and looked at the mirror causing me to groan louder and grab my pillow and cover my face as I fell back on the bed. "everybody food is done" I heard Mickey yell downstairs causing me to get up and shower.

"At least no one can make fun of your lack of style since we all wear uniforms" Marcus said to me as I sat down at the table causing Mia to snicker.

"Hmm someone thinks wearing wife beaters and joggers makes them a stylist" I said rolling my eyes.

"Whatever" he said rolling his eyes.

"Mr. Cole is going to be here in 20 minutes" Mickey said as we all ate in silence. Even before the death of our parents we never really talked during the time we ate our parents always taught us that it was rude to do that. As we ate the realization of me actually going to school started to settle in as the view of my scrambled eggs started getting fuzzy and it felt like the whole table was doing a 360 causing me to feel nauseous.

"Are you okay" Marcus asked concerned.

"Yeah I just got to go to the bathroom real quick," I said slowly as I made a straight shot to my personal bathroom. Just breath I told myself as I looked under the sink cabinet and quickly moving everything out of the way until I saw my box of matches. I slowly let out a deep breath and lit the match and watched the flame dance on the small stick, and all of a sudden my breath was slowly slowing down. I will always love the dance of the flame and how even though it looks so small it capture the eyes of many,my friend.

"Maze come on Cole is here" Mia yelled from downstairs causing me to quickly blow out my little friend and throwing it in the trash bin in the corner and running downstairs.

"You okay" Mia said as I got downstairs?

"Perfect" I said quickly as I grabbed my bookbag that she had in her hand before heading outside to the car.

"So this is your first day of highschool but don't worry you guys won't be that far behind they just started yesterday" Cole said as he drove like a maniac down the road.

-15 minutes later-

"And we are here" Cole said as he put the car in park and turned and looked back at us smiling

"Alive thank god" Marcus said rolling his eyes and opening the door of the car.

"I'm not that bad of a driver am I guys" he asked himself as we rushed out of the car before he could look back at us.

"Have a good day I'll pick you guys up after" he yelled out the car as we all headed into Fore High School.

"Where are you going Marcus" I said as Marcus headed in the opposite direction from the office?

"Well I rather find a beautiful darkskin queen and ask for direction" he said as he grinned widely.

"How-" I started to say.

"With a little black boy magic and plus all they are going to do is going to assign you someone and I would rather choose" he said before doing a little dance and spinning on his heels and walk off into the crowd of students.

"I think I'm going to do that too" Mia said slowly smiling.

"Except for the dark skin girl part" she said awkwardly before walking away.

"Okay I guess it's just me and you Mickey" I said before turning around and realizing she is gone.

"Okay just me" I said to myself and letting out a deep breath and walking to the office. As I got to the office I saw this older mid 30 looking women typing away on her computer.

"Hello" I said trying to make my presence known, but she just keep typing on her computer causing me to get a little annoyed.

"My name is Maze Bright i'm new here" I said louder causing her to finally stop typing and look down on me through her glasses before clearing her throat.

"Oh yes I have heard about you have a seat your tour guide will be here in a minute" she said really slowly as the smell of cigarettes and stale coffee floated through the air and then she looked back to her computer and keep typing. I took a deep breath before sitting down and waiting. After a few minutes passed, a girl with loose brown curls and green eyes with freckles  came skipping in with a lollipop in her mouth came in.

"My name is Zara i'm your guide follow me" she said as she flipped her hair over her shoulder and walked out the door causing me to follow her.

"Your name is Maze right" she asked as we continued walking down the hall?

"Ye-" I started but was cut off quickly.

"Of course you are everybody here talks about the bright family you guys are kind of like the freak show that everybody wants to see....... No offense"

"Great" I said lowly rolling my eyes.

"Baby" she squealed with a high pitch tone causing me to cringe as she jumped in to what I assumed her boyfriend's arm and then they started making out for what felt like thirty minutes which was super awkward.

"Oh babe save some for the party," she said as she pulled away and slapped his chest playfully.

"Who is she" he said as he looked me up and down causing me to internally throw up.

"She is one of the brights her name is Maze" she said sounding a little annoyed as he was looking at me up and down.

"Name is Adam and this is Elijah" Adam said as and then all of a sudden I then notice the guy that was standing beside him with a camera around his neck was he always there I thought to myself.

"Hi" I said awkwardly as Adam was still staring at me with hungry eyes causing Zara to puff out air and roll her eyes.

"Anyway Elijah why don't you show the freak show to her class she has the same first period as us me and Adam have stuff to talk about" she said annoyed before grabbing Adam and pulling him away into a different direction.

"Sorry she can be a well you know" Elijah said rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.

"It's fine" I said smiling lightly well he doesn't seem like the type to hangout with them I wonder why they hang out together I'll ask later. All of a sudden the bell ranged causing the hallway to get more flooded as people started walking to class.

"This way" he said as he started walking with me following behind him.
