Did I Mention?

I walk out of Potions class with Rachel, cracking my neck.  "I think my brain is going to explode," I complain.  Rachel shakes her head, looking dazed, "I don't think I remember a single word he said."  I tighten my leather jacket as we step outside.

Jay is flirting with some girls who recently went to Salon Mal.  As in, Mal used her spell book to give them makeovers.  Rachel didn't need one, since she inherited long, golden locks from her mother.  "Hey, do you have a dress for the coronation?" Rachel asks.

"Uh, not yet.  Evie insisted on making one for me.  She said I can't wear my usual all black or else people will think I'm going to a funeral, not the coronation of Auradon's new king."  Rachel nods solemnly, "I feel that.  Well, I already have one.  It's pink and purple.  Mom flipped when she saw it.  She loves it.  The tailor's just taking it in a bit more-"

While Rachel rambles on, I notice Mal manipulating Ben into eating one of the love cookies.  I had to get Rachel far away.  "Hey, Rach.  Don't you have class?"  She glances at her watch and yelps, "I do!  See ya later!  You're going to the tourney match, right?"  I nod and she races off.  I approach Mal and Ben and stand behind Mal.  Ben is staring into Mal's eyes as he describes the cookie, "The... the chocolate... The chocolate chips are... I'm sorry. Um...uh, they're...they're warm and soft.  And they're sweet..."  He somehow stares deeper into her eyes, like he can see her soul, "Mal, have you always had those little golden flecks in your eyes?"

I cover my mouth with my hand, shaking and struggling to contain my laugh.  Jay puts his hands on Ben's shoulders, "How you feeling...bro?"  Ben's eyes never leave Mal, "I feel... I feel... I feel like...like singing your name.  Mal!"  Mal jumps and quickly covers his mouth.  His voice is muffled as he sings again, "Mal."  Jay takes the bag of cookies and stares at them as if asking, "What have we done?"

The bleachers are packed to capacity and the blue and yellow hurts my eyes.  I'm not used to the screaming and cheering and jump when it suddenly gets louder.

"This is a nail-biter, folks. There's 47 seconds left on the clock. We're all tied up. The Sherwood falcons, two. The fighting knights, two. What a game between Auradon's fiercest rivals."

Jay pats Chad's back as he is called to the field.  I admire Jay's teamwork.

"The teams get into their huddles and take up positions along the kill zone. Akiho! The dragons have been laying down a withering hail of fire."

Jay is called to the field, but he surprisingly pulls Carlos from the bench.  I have no idea what he says to the Coach, but he puts Carlos on the field.

"He's bringing that hothead Jay in from the Isle of the Lost and that little guy Carlos can barely hold a shield."

"When they break from their huddles, this is gonna be a big moment here. And the tipoff is ready. Here we go. Long pass goes to Jay. Jay dishes off to prince Ben. Nice little block by Carlos. He does a little dancing jig in his opponent's face. And now Jay gets the ball back. Here comes Jay! Jay, hurdling maneuver at mid-field."

Jay passes to Ben.

"Jay makes a nice pass to Prince Ben through the kill zone.   Big block by Chad! Prince Ben moves over wide, gives it back to Jay. He's in the clear! Shot! Oh, what a save by Philip, the Falcons' goalkeeper!"

The crowd is tensing up, but I feel nothing.  I have faith in my friends.

"23 seconds left. You could cut the tension with a sword. The long ball is played into Jay. Jay, great jump, great leap. And a great move by Jay. Big block from Chad. Jay dishes off to Prince Ben. And then Carlos with a big block, goes down. Jay through the kill zone, picks up Carlos. Oh, he's being hammered by dragon fire. Still, going on. Jay, hurdling maneuver at mid-field. He's in the clear. The ball goes back to Jay."

Carlos uses his shield to hurl Jay up and when Jay nears the goal, he passes to Ben.

"He passes to prince Ben. He scores! Prince Ben has won it! What an unselfish play by Jay! What a team! Incredible! And it's the new guys, Jay and Carlos, who set up the prince for the win here. What a victory! An absolutely wonderful end to one of the best games ever. Here they come, folks. The winners of the first tourn..."

Ben snatches the mic from the announcer, "Excuse me. Excuse me. Can I have your attention, please? There's something I'd like to say."

He briefly pauses and then yells, making a M with with his arms, "Give me an "M"!"

Everyone but Mal, Evie, and I makes a M, "M"!

"Give me an "A!"

"A"!

"Give me an "L!"

"L!"

"What does that spell?"

Evie and I join in at this point, "Mal!"  Ben yells, "Come on, I can't hear you!"

"Mal!"

"I love you, Mal! Did I mention that?"

My mouth drops open and I almost die trying not to laugh.

Ben turns to the band, "Give me a beat! Whoo!"

Doug yells, "Uno, dos, tres, quatro!"

Evie and I grab Mal's shoulders.  I almost collapse laughing.  "Oh, my God! The cookie!"  Evie is laughing with me.

Mal is shocked, yet unusually calm, "What was in that cookie?"

Ben starts singing and the cheerleaders and all the players join in with his dancing.

Ben appears in front of Mal, Evie, and me.  Evie and I casually scoot aside so they have more space.

"I love you, Mal! Did I mention that?"

Audrey snatches the mic from Ben, "Chad's my boyfriend now! And I'm going to the coronation with him. So I don't need your pity date."  She kisses Chad and Evie looks away.  I get angry and shove Audrey back with one hand.  Chad keeps her from stumbling and she glares at me.  I glare back and put my hands on my hip.

Ben grabs the microphone again, "Mal! Will you go to the coronation with me?'

Mal sighs and yells into the mic, "Yes!"

Ben excitedly yells, "She said yes!"

Jay appears by Ben's side with their gigantic trophy, "Let's go, Ben. The whole team's waiting for you."

Ben leaves and I notice Evie still looks sad.  Mal and I share a look and Mal speaks up, "I feel really sorry for Audrey."

Evie looks surprised, "You do?"

Mal and I nod and I jump in, "Yeah. I feel like if she were talented like you- and she knew how to sew and knew beauty tips- then she wouldn't need a prince to make her feel better about herself."  Evie smiles, "I guess I am kind of talented."  Mal chimes in, "You are definitely gifted."

Evie smiles, "Thanks, girls."

The team hoist Jay up and he proudly raises the trophy.

"And there he is. Jay, the most valuable player. How do you like that?"
