There are four houses at Ilvermorny; Horned Serpent, Wampus, Thunderbird, and Pukwudgie. When a student starts their education at Ilvermorny, they step onto a Gordian Knot on the floor in the center of the entrance hall with large wooden statues of the mascots for the four houses facing them. The carved statues react if they want the student in their house. The older students watch in silence from a circular balcony on a floor above them as the new students are sorted. The Carvings react in different ways: the crystal in the Horned Serpent carving's forehead glows, the wampus carving roars, the Thunderbird carving beats its wings, and the Pukwudgie carving raises its arrow.

However, sometimes more than one carving will try to select the same student, so the student is then able to choose the house they prefer. This happens very rarely. Sometimes-as rare as once a decade or even a generation as in the case of one student-a student will be selected by every house. Seraphina Picquery, who was President of MACUSA 1920-1928 is known to have had the honour. She chose Horned Serpent.
Rachel was the first to step on the Gordian Knot. As she stood there with confidence, the Horned Serpent statue glow chosen her to their house. She smiled to herself getting into the house she knew she could get into since she looked up the different houses when she was researching the school. It was the house that favor scholars and represent the mind. Rachel step back for the next student to go up.
The next first year student to step up was Josh. Josh fidget with his hands nervous as to what house will choose him. Then the Pukwudgie statue raised it's arrow. He smiled as he got chosen into the house that represents heart.
Emma step up next. She been through a lot back at home with her mom and step dad and sister. She never had a childhood. She had to grow up fast. She stood there looking tough. Then the Wampus statue roars and she knew that she got into the house of the warriors. The house she feel she belong in even though she is only 11 years old. Emma went back with the other student as another girl, Ashley step up.
When Ashley step up she was very nervous. She wasn't sure which house she will be chosen. After a few minutes the Thunderbird beats its wings showing that it has chosen her to the house that represents soul and favors the adventure.
Other students take that step and was chosen into their respective houses. Jasmine was the last student that had to be chosen. She step at the center and waited to see which house choose her. First the Horned Serpent statue glow. Jasmine was surprised because she didn't think she was that much of a scholar. Then the Wampus statue roars and she looked at herself. "I am no warrior" she thought to herself. Then the Pukwudie statue raised its arrow and lastly the Thunderbird statue beats its wings. Everyone looked at Jasmine with amazement. This was something no one would have expected. It was almost rare that all statues would choose the same student. Jasmine didn't know what to do. She was confused.
"What should I do?" asked Jasmine. The Headmaster Agilbert Fontaine went up to her. "Well since all the houses choose you then you have to be the one to choose which one you feel that you belong to" he told her. "There is a reason why all of them wants you. Depending on the qualities and personality you possessed."
Jasmine POV
I do work hard and I love to read and learn. I know a lot about history. The topic I am the most of an export in is on the Salem Witch Trials. So I guess that would make me a scholar. I stood up against the bullies of my old school and I stood up for my old friends so I guess that would make me a warrior. I am also a Libra and I am rule by Venus. My matron goddess is Aphrodite who is the goddess of love. So of course I follow my heart and I love to help people. That's what I want to do with my life. Help people. I also seek adventure and everyone would say that I have a good soul. After examining my qualities of reasons why all the houses would choose me I made my decision. I walked over to the Pukwudgie statue.
"Hi my name is Josh" a boy chosen for the house introduced himself. I thought he was cute. "My name is Jasmine" I introduced myself and we smiled at each other.
After the sorting, the students is brought to a large hall where they are chosen once more, this time for a wand. Prior to the end of Rappaport's Law, children could not have a wand prior to schooling and had to leave their wand at school during school breaks and could only take the wand out of school when they reached seventeen years of age.
