Asami's POV

I had always considered family as the most important pillar in a person's life. A person's relationship with their family is one that would guide them along with the future they chose, whether it was for the better or the worst.

My family wasn't perfect. It never was, to begin with, but we made the most of it.
My father, in the early days of his career, would never take things for granted. He would approach everything with the utmost respect and diligence. Never would he venture on a proposal without the advice of his superiors and subordinates. He would never take the credit all for himself either. That characteristic has never changed.

Thinking about it now, I knew he didn't come up with my marriage arrangement without an individual backing it up with statistics about how much of a positive investment it could be. And I knew he certainly wouldn't invest in anything that didn't give him something in return.

The moment I left his office, I had made up my mind. I needed to dig around my father's business. I needed to find out what he would gain from the forfeit of my happiness.

But I knew I couldn't involve Korra into this. I knew how much power my father held and I was certain that he would do anything to get his way.

So when I saw her sitting upright on the hospital bed, with her hospital gown too big on her lean body, I made a promise not to involve her. She had gone through so much already because of me.

So, as much as I hated it, I had to break my promise. I had to keep this a secret.

"What are you so deep in thought for?" Korra asked, her head slightly tilted, in an attempt to make me look at her.

We were currently having lunch at the courtyard, just a few metres across from the campus orchard that the students studying horticulture would often use. It was a secluded area and not many people would wander around the area as it was a little too far from the more sociable spots around campus.

I smiled at Korra as she kept her attention towards me, reveling at how beautiful she looked in a casual outfit of a cropped hoodie, paired with skinny jeans that accentuated her toned leg muscles. Her bobbed short hair fluttered as the wind gently blew, practically covering her face, and I giggled at how she shook her head frantically.

"My hair's getting longer." She blew upwards to get a stray strand out of ge vacinity of her eyes. "I need a haircut."

"I want to see you with longer hair." I whispered.

She blushed immediately, making my heart flutter. I found it adorable at how she still blushes for me, no matter how much time has passed.

She took a minute to fully regain herself, before turning back to me wig a serious look.

"You still haven't answered my question." She pouted.

I reached for her hand on her lap and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

"Don't worry. I'm okay." I said, as calmly as I possible could, before retracting my hand away from hers. The action was forced and abrupt and I hoped she didn't notice, but I couldn't risk any sign of crack in my white lie. I had to keep her away from my investigations.

She nodded slowly, with a hint of curiosity, but thankfully, she didn't press on.

After lunch, Korra headed towards the science building to attend her back-to-back lectures. She told me she had to finish some reports so she probably wouldn't be coming home with me.

I kissed her goodbye, cherishing the sweet taste of her lips that I loved so much. She smiled into the kiss and hummed softly. Seeing her so happy, made my heart ache. I didn't know how long I needed to lie to her. I wasn't even sure if I could last keeping a secret from her. But I knew I had to.
