so uh,,,
this is a hanschen x ernst one shot. i mainly wrote it for myself because i thought it was cute but yea
i wrote it listening to word of your body reprise which is bLESSEd

also if the dialogue is weird i was trying to make them sound like they were from the 1800's and i have barely any idea how they spoke despite having read original victorian novels (as in the ones that haven't been translated to modern english), binge watched doctor who, cried over gentleman jack and watched the spring awakening bootleg like five times now :')

enjoy :)

The sun was setting in a golden haze across the horizon, giving the pearly white clouds a soft pink accent. As it slowly sunk into the pleasant view of the little village, a weak breeze awoke and blew the blonde bangs of teenage boy's hair out of his sharp and face, to reveal icy blue pools cut into his face like diamonds just above the light pink pillows that were his cheeks.

Hanschen Rilow and Ernst Robel were sat together at the top of a lucious green hill growing out of the abundant meadow just outside the local village, Ernst's head leaning softly on Hanschen's shoulder.

Up that high, they felt like pirates stood at the helm of their fantasy childhood ship. You could see everything from up there: the turquoise stream where the girls would often splash each other and play merrily, and would glitter every time its crystal clear waters would catch the sunlight; the quaint-looking houses that the village folk would walk past and admire, blatantly ignoring the regular cries of discomfort and pain regularly coming from Martha Bessel's house; the dark and foreboding buildings at opposite sides of the hamlet that were the two schools; and finally, the vineyard.

The two boys had lots of memories at that special place, the two of them nestled safely within the thick layers of fading green leaves. Most of them were just childlike memories of playing make-believe games. However, they both agreed that their favourite out of all of them was the time where Hanschen had kissed Ernst.

The day after that had happened, they could barely be in the same room together without becoming blushing messes every time they accidentally (or, on Hanschen's part anyway, purposefully) made eye contact, and Otto and Georg had been thoroughly confused about why they had acted so strangely.

Thankfully, they had gotten past that awkward phase, and could act like normal friends with each other, whenever the other boys were around. Since then, Hanschen and Ernst had made many successful attempts to have beautiful moments alone like that day at the vineyard at every chance they got.

Today, they'd chosen to meet at this hill, because it was so quiet. So lonely. So peaceful. It was relaxing just sit back, safe with the knowledge that they had each other, and that they were surrounded by dark purple fields of lavender flowers that gave off their signature sweet scent. And it was even more reassuring (especially to Ernst, as he was much more nervous and conscious than Hanschen was) to know that they weren't going to get caught being together.

After all, the girls never came up here except on the rare occasion they actually bothered to care about where Isle had gone, because they'd rather braid each other's hair by the stream; the boys didn't come up here because Melchior (who was the natural group leader) had been expelled, and Moritz had met his demise; and as for the adults? They couldn't care less about the safety of the children as long as they were out of their hair til nightfall.

The old preacher at church had hammered into their heads that marriage and love was only for men and women and that it was not possible for a woman to be with a woman and a man to be with a man- that it wasn't really love and it was just selfish human sin. You were going to burn in hell with murderers and thieves if you were ever shameful enough to love someone of the same gender: everybody believed that.

If they were ever spotted kissing, or holding hands, or cuddling, they would be ostracized, kicked out, maybe even killed.

Who knew what could happen to them?

Honestly, they were incredibly grateful that isolated spots like this hill existed, or else meeting up would be even more dangerous than it already was.

"The village is so beautiful." Ernst commented softly, his quiet voice sounding like the melody being plucked on the silken strings of a harp to Hanschen.

"I agree." Hanschen's smoother and richer voice replied as he stared at the summer wind blowing through the dusky lavender flowers. He slowly slid his hands into Ernst's as they lounged about in the meadow.

Quickly, Ernst felt the warm sensation of a pink blush rising to his tanned cheeks and instantly smiled. It was little things, like the way they delicately held hands whenever possible, that made him feel incredibly lucky to be with him, even if they weren't technically together like that.

The blonde hue looked back at the darker hue, and his ocean eyes met Ernst's own honey-coloured amber orbs.

(a/n: i know from reading countless bad boy x good girl fanfics on my old acc when i was like 11 that saying "orbs" is cliché,,, but i couldn't think of anything else to say because i don't like to use the same nouns/adjectives/adverbs on the same sentence so shHhH)

The two smiled at each other before looking away shyly. Even though they had been doing this for several months now, it still felt fresh and new, as if they were holding hands for the first time. To Ernst, it was incredibly sweet to him that even though Hanschen acted like he was the shit and that he was "smooth" and "flirtatious", he was actually just as nervous and hesitant as he was.

There was a moment of silence- not awkward, but it was natural and it wasn't uncomfortable. The two gathered their thoughts together again, Hanschen being the first to speak.

"Darling, Ernst, what-" he stopped before he swallowed dryly. It was unlike Hanschen to be nervous about asking something. "What do you think will happen, in the future?"

Ernst furrowed his brows in thought. "I'm not quite sure what you mean." he said, the confusion shining through his voice.

"I mean, when we're eighteen, and our parents will probably make us marry somebody, and it would be cruel to keep doing this while we had to go out and be made to find a wife." he explained a little sadly.

The slightly younger boy shrugged. "I would like to imagine that if everything went our way, we could somehow escape. We would run away somewhere into a nice house in the middle of nowhere, where nobody could find us and force us apart. And we would be happy like that together because we could be ourselves."

That did sound like a rather nice image to Hanschen. He could picture sharing a bed with Ernst, raising a family with Ernst (though he knew that even if the previous fantasy ever came true, it would be impossible to adopt children with it). It sounded lovely though- no, it sounded beautiful.

Ernst could see past Hanschen's emotionless expression. He'd spent enough time with the taller boy to realise that this wasn't him trying to force his feelings away, it was just the face he normally made whenever he was imagining something.

Their grip on the other's hands tightened a little. They didn't want to ever let go of each other, not right now.

It was only just then that Ernst remembered that he would have to go home soon, and the glowing, golden medallion in the mirror-blue night had almost sunken into the sky, and when you looked up, there was a deep violet blanket covering them with some barely visible stars studded within it.

"Our parents are going to expect us home soon." the darker hue said gently, standing up and helping Hanschen up too.

"You're right." the other replied, once he was on his feet. "Let me walk with you."

"I wouldn't want it any other way." Ernst responded happily, feeling his cheeks turn hot all again when Hanschen kissed him softly for a few seconds.

The two boys became merely shadows in the breezy lavender fields as they made their journey back home, unscathed.
