I woke from my slumber to the sound of my alarm screeching in my ear. I rolled over slapping my hand onto the snooze button and went back to sleep.
Eventually I was woken again by the same screeching. I rolled groggily out of my double bed, dragging the duvet with me and onto the floor. I slumped into my kitchen and boiled the kettle humming to myself. I fixed myself a bowl of cereal and then poured myself a cup of peppermint tea. Today was the first day of tour with a new company, I worked as an assistant manager for a band called You Me At Six, and although I hadn't met them yet I was sure we would all get along great.
As I finished washing up my stuff in the kitchen I headed to the bathroom to shower then get ready - I put my auburn hair into messy bun on my head and put on minimal make up (mascara and lipstick). I picked out a white tank top and ripped skinny jeans to change into and slipped on my beloved vans when I heard my phone buzz on my desk.
hey, im outside, you ready?
It was from my boss, Rajesh, he had offered to give me a lift to the tour bus from where we would be off to our first stop: Glasgow. I replied quickly:
okay will be down in a min 🙂
I grabbed my suitcase by the door and stuffed my essentials into my bag - lipstick, phone, charger and wallet. I locked up and got into the passenger seat of Rajesh's Ford Focus.
'So, you ready to meet the lads?' He asked as he revved the engine and sped off.
'Yeah, they seem alright, I can't be dealing with any drama at the moment' I replied, fiddling with my thumbs.
After a half an hour drive we arrived at where we would meet to drive to the venue in the tour bus ready for the gig tomorrow. It was currently 9am and we were all a bit tired as we arrived in the car park. I spotted a group of five attractive men gathered by a bus, surrounded by luggage, each with a thermos in their hands assumedly filled with coffee. Dotted around were members of the crew who had their own tour bus to travel in.
'Oh, Kethryn, there are a couple of extra bunks on the band's bus so we will be staying on that one' Rajesh told me as he gestured to the gathering of men by the bus. I frowned, I much preferred to stay with the crew as I didn't usually have anything in common with the bands I travelled with, but maybe this time would be different, like the time I toured with All Time Low on their The Young Renegades tour. The band and I had stayed close and I was very lucky to have them as friends, especially in the industry I worked in. They are in fact the reason I had gotten this gig as they had toured with You Me At Six previously and put me in touch.
Rajesh led the way over to the bus dragging our suitcases along with us and waved to the men as they all gave a friendly wave back. As we got closer I realised I had underestimated how attractive they were and as we were introduced I couldn't help but stare.
'Hi, I'm Matt, nice to meet you' said a tall, dark and handsome one, I replied with a friendly smile,
'You too'
'This is Dan, Chris, Max and Josh' Each waved as their name was said. Dan was a classically handsome man, chiseled and pristine. Chris was lanky and sweet like schoolboy. Max was small and childish and always seemed to be grinning. And finally Josh, he was also tall dark and handsome but in a different way to Matt, he was more scruffy with curly brown hair rather than neatly styled, his jacket was a tad too big for him and his t-shirt hung a bit too low.
I said hello to all of them and held up my thermos as a salute, almost in solidarity of tiredness. We lugged our suitcases onto the bus as we said goodbye to the crew and Rajesh read through the itinerary to me although I was too tired to listen. My bunk was right at the end of the bus opposite Dan's and below Max's, I assumed they would be decent bunkmates, at least I was the closest to the toilet!
I left my suitcase on the bed and joined the others in the lounge space at the back of the bus past the toilet. They were chatting about the rehearsal and soundcheck times as I took a seat in between Chris and Max opposite Josh, Dan and Rajesh and another crew member I had yet to meet, a fellow female.
'Kethryn, this is Paighsley, our new bodyguard' Chris said.
'Hey, it's nice to have another girl on the bus, I was worried I'd be overloaded with testosterone' I said and Paighsley laughed as she slid her hand onto Rajesh's thigh. I raised an eyebrow at this, I'd never heard anything about Rajesh's love life as he was my boss but I had also never seen anything like this in my time working with him.
'Indeed, it'll be nice to have some female company' she replied, smiling still.
'Anyway, could we please change the time of the rehearsal to a bit later, 8am seems excessive. I'd like a lie in' Josh changed the subject and was obviously uncomfortable with the touching of Rajesh's leg by Paighsley.
'Oh come on, it'll be fine, we need the rehearsal done by 10 so we can start setting everything up properly for the soundcheck at 10:30, then you get the whole day to yourselves, you can do whatever you want' I explained, trying to sound optimistic, even though I wasn't looking forward to that early start either. I smiled shyly as Josh sighed and muttered a grumpy 'fine' and settled back into his seat. I had a feeling I had annoyed him until he sat forward again.
'As long as you promise me a white coffee, with oat milk, and an vegan cheese bagel every morning. Then you've got yourself a deal.' He smirked and held his hand out. I thought for a second, then reached out and shook it.
'Deal.' I smirked back.
