Killing the vampires who'd bitten the child and returning to the Volturi was quick. Aro spoke to Jane and commended me for the swift murder of the child. I retreat to my room after a quick stop at the library, grabbing multiple books that looked centuries old. I put them on the stone window ceil and take a single glance out looking at Volterra. I could see humans running back and forth like ants and I could see a group come into the castle. Feeding time for the Volturi, I guess I should hunt later tonight, get far enough from the city that it won't cause any alarm. I sigh and watch my skin glimmer from the sun, and I move far enough from the window that I could be seen and I open the leather-bound book.
The book detailed different things that the Volturi had done over the centuries. The calligraphy lined in swirls and was honestly beautiful. The way the writing detailed different events almost read like they were disgusted or at least disapproved. My eyebrows furrowed as I flipped to the back of the book, the final page had a name, Carlisle Cullen. My breath catches as my finger runs over the name. The man that was like a father to me had disapproved of Volturi practices had written this journal. I inhale, closing the book slowly and setting it down on a table. I take a final deep breath and pick up another book. Maybe one day I'd return to my family, but I could never do it while my sister was human.
