Timers (a few)

Matthew Williams (street corner)
<Canada>

I look around at the quaint shops and restaurants, feeling my anxieties rise. What if they don't like me? What if it stops right before I met them? What if they're rude?? I am jerked out of my thoughts by someone tapping on my shoulder.

"Excuse me, miss, but may you point us in the direction of the nearest public library?" I turn and find a group of five people. "Yeah, just take a left right there and walk two blocks down. you can't miss it." They all nod and walk off. A minute later I feel another person tap my shoulder. "Have you seen a group of men pass by? Five people with varying accents?" I turn to address him but freeze. The second I make eye contact, my timer buzzes. He stares in shock as well. "You... you're my soulmate?" He looks genuinely happy, smiling widely. They take their hand and softly grasp mine, then lean down and kiss the back of it. "Nice to meet you."

As the warmth of his palm leaves mine feeling empty, the original group walks back into view. "Hey, Matthew! There you are!" We both whip around in surprise and smile awkwardly. I grab his hand and turn it over, haphazardly digging through my pockets and pulling out a marker. Scribbling my number and name on his palm, I make sure it's readable as I write. "Call me sometime, alright?" I smile politely as I start walking back to where I left my family.

Emil Steilsson (game store)
<Iceland>

Seriously, they don't give me a break! Just this morning I had my mother trying to dress me in (L/F/C). She known I hate that color! Whatever, at least I got to choose my own clothes. I should feel glad that they want to make this day special, but they take me shopping for things I dont like. They do this every time, even though I've told them to stop. I glance to the side, pausing in my rant to read the sign above the building. "Finally," I breath out as I open the door, " something I'd actually want." The game store clerk looks up from their book to greet me and I smile back.

I didn't realize they got more games I want since the last time I had been here. As I reach out to pick up one, I bump hands with someone else. "Oh, sorry did you want it?" Well, at least the boy I bumped into is cute. Oh no... I hope I don't mess this up! "No, sorry, just looking." I grin awkwardly and pull my hand away. He laughs a little and holds it out to me. I pause and glance at his wrist, then look at mine. "Wait a minute," we look at eachother in shock, and he blushes heavily. "Well, I'm (Y/N), nice to meet you." We shake hands and I give him my phone number. "Call me later, uh..." I trail off, suddenly remembering that he didn't tell me his name. "Emil" My voice becomes cheerful again as I repeat his name, letting it roll off my tongue. "Cute, it suits you." He turns red again and I leave, as he smiles at my retreating figure.

Jet Kirkland (zoo)
<Australia>

Ugh, my younger brother wont stop trying to see how much longer I have left on my soulmate timer. Which only makes me more nervous about finding them today! It also doesn't help that I'm stuck at the zoo with my whole family. I'm just glad they didn't make me leave my sketchbook or headphones in the car. But of course, they have to go to the bathroom, and both the reptile house and the insect pavilion are close to closing. Most of my family can't stand them, but I adore both the snakes and the spiders. "You don't look very excited there, sheila. What's got you so bogged down?" I jump a bit and look up at the stranger.

Well, he seems pleasant enough, but should I really tell him? I guess it wouldn't hurt to be polite. "I just want to go to the reptile house and the insect pavilion, but my family is in the restroom. And on top of that they wouldn't want to visit them anyway." He thinks about it for a moment, mulling over my words. "How about you go yourself? Or I could come with, and they'll know where you went off to. Could say you went with a new friend." I pause and take a moment to consider it. While he does look stronger than me, he seems too friendly to up and grab me. Although, I do want to see the exhibits before they close.

Whatever, I'm old enough to make decisions myself. "Sure! Let me text my mom first." As my fingers fly across the screen, he gets more and more excited.  "Done, now let's be off. I'm (Y/N) by the way." He steps out of the way and holds out his arm towards the the path. "Ladies first. Also, my name is Jet." I laugh and set off towards the reptiles first, Jet following close behind. As we walk we have some great conversations, but once we got there we talked about the animals. But it comes to an end when we exit the insect building, as I see my family walking towards us. I turn to say goodbye to Jet and he just places something into my hand with a wink, then just walks away grinning. On our way to the car I talk to my mom. But I only open my hand to see what I'm holding when no one looking. It's a scrap of paper that reads 'it's nice to finally meet you, soulmate.' and has a phone number underneath.

Lovino Vargas (bakery)

<Romano/South Italy>

I'm glad my family likes to include me in things, but this is ridiculous. We go out because they feel like it, and no one even remembers what happens today. "Can I got to the café across the street?" My mom just nods her head, continuing the search for throw pillows. The bell on the door rings softly as it gets tapped by the metal frame. It's very warm and inviting, with a few people sitting at the tables and booths. On the counter, there is a small 'ring for service' bell. I tap it gently, and awoman skips from the back. "What can I get for you, sweetie?" She smiles wide, radiating a cheerful attitude. "Can I get a (bakery treat) and a (favorite drink)?" Nodding, the woman disappears into the back again. I sit down at a corner booth, watching the people pass by on their daily schedules.

That is, until I see an odd pair of men walking past. One of them seems to be arguing with the other, but neither of them are actually angry. The cheerful one finally speaks up, as they slowly pass by. I hear my order in the background noise, as as I go to get up the pair notices that I was watching them. I make eye contact with both of them and smile, then walk towards the front counter. I sit back down in the cozy booth, with the bell ringing cutely as people leave and come in. It then occurs to me that I cant feel the comforting tick of my wrist timer. I was tapping my fingers too much to notice it go off!

As I am cursing myself out in my head, I hear someone slide into the both with me. "Hey. Girl." Looking up, I discover it's one of the people that were arguing. He seems so much calmer now, unlike with the person from before. "Oh, how can I help you?" He glances to the side for a moment, looking like he's at war with his thoughts. "You're my soulmate." We both sit there awkwardly for a moment, then I write my phone number and name on an unused napkin and give it to him. "I'm glad you are, but despite how much I want to stay and chat, I need to go." He looks angry and honestly a little sad by my words. I stand up and kiss his cheek, before winking and sauntering out the door.
