Claire and I were walking down a few halls to be expected. We were both walking down a hall I've been to before, it was where I set off the explosion. There was still fire, but it was toning down gradually.
Mainly, Claire and I were looking at the bodies that were burning up. Claire looked mystified because of how ashy and hot they were, the fact that they had to endure an explosion must've been something alien to her, but I just stared at them. I need to look through their pockets to see if they had a key for the computer. But, the bodies were on fire though, and the flames weren't that tiny. I slowly stepped over to one of the bodies, I kneel'd down, and Claire tried to stop me,
"W-Wait..! Xavier... W-What are you doing..?" She asked quickly, she looked confused. I replied to her straightly, "I'm just looking. We need that key." I didn't turn to look back, I just did what I had to. I slowly reached my hand in the front pocket of the dead and burning guard, I could see his skeleton's form because of how burnt his skin was.
He wasn't blown to pieces, but the flames definitely got him, I could feel my arm and my hand burning. It was getting super heated quickly, and I felt the sizzles on my arm. I grunted repeatedly, the pain from the flames felt like lava on me. Just cooking my skin off, and I tried to blow out the flames, but they were too big to blow out. It would just give them more air, every time I breathed I felt a tiny bit of ash getting sucked up towards me.
I didn't want that in my lungs of course.
I dug through the pocket, and I felt something, something EXTREMELY hot and solid. I made a low yelp and grunt of pain as I pulled it out, "Rrr... Rrrahhh..!" My hand was burned real good, I dropped the object to the floor behind me, I turned to look at it while I grabbed my hand tightly.
It was a key, but I didn't know what it was for. Claire looked shocked at what I did to myself, she quickly stepped over to me, and looked at my hand, "X... Xavier... Why didn't you wait for the... Y-You know, fire to die out..?" She asked me with concern in her voice, I took a few breaths, pausing from the pain. I slowly answered Claire, "I... We need the key. We need to get out." I firmly said, but not being too scary at least.
Claire slowly nodded at me, and the key was fiery red and steaming. The end was the part of it that was burning, and I slowly leaned down to it, blowing on it. I used my other hand to feel it, it was cooling down slowly. I finally grabbed it, and it was with my burned hand, it hurt to grab or touch anything, but I dealt with it. Claire looked genuinely concerned, she was marveling at my hand with a sad yet cute look. I looked back down at her,
"I am fine." I said quickly before walking past her, she followed. Claire was silent for a few moments, I held the key tightly in my hand. I was starting to feel more satisfied with everything happening now, from getting the first notably comfortable rest I haven't had in a long time, to getting the literal key out of this god forsaken place. I only wished I could feel as accomplished all the time. It was also pretty nice feeling to have someone like Claire not be completely terrified of me now.
The silence stopped as she asked me, "U-Um... X-Xavier... How do you... Handle pain so well?" In a very curious way, and I thought about it for a while. That actually got my brain scratching, how did I do so well with pain? Even bullets haven't stopped me, but, my best guess would have to be... That I've grown used to it. I snapped maybe, feeling barely anymore pain because of how desensitized I've become of it.
"... I do not know, Claire. I just do." I said, in a sort of cool way I suppose. I felt pretty cool saying it at least, hehe.
Claire responded, "Oh. But, don't you ever just... G-Get tired of feeling pain? You seem to not... Well, care about getting hurt that much." She said in a caring manner. Which was of course very sweet of her to me, I grew quiet again. I didn't know how to answer that, Claire had a point, even though I get angry quickly, I withstand pain a lot. I didn't really say anything, I just continued walking with her. I thought that would be the end of her questions, but she asked another,
