"You know I was only joking, right?" Holly asked, falling down next to where I was sitting on my bed, an array of books about voodoo I had found on various bookshelves around the house that my mom had collected over the years, set out in front of me.

"Hmm? Yeah, I know. I was just thinking about how interesting it looks." I replied, sipping my coffee slowly as I read down the A4 page.

"Yeah, sure." Holly laughed, shaking the bed. I nudged her with my elbow.

Lucas stared up at us from where he was sitting on the floor below my bed with his laptop set out in front of him.

"Sirena, you weren't thinking about how interesting voodoo looks, you were thinking about how hot Matty looks." he mumbled distractedly.

Kass snatched the laptop from Lucas and typed something in quickly. She tended to type quickly and loudly. It was really annoying.

Lucas looked up at Holly and me and raised an eyebrow.

"Shut up!" I said, waving him off with the book I was pretty submerged in. He chuckled.

"I don't blame you, though. It's just a bit weird because you're always stalking him-"

"I'm not stalking him!" I protested, but decided on giving up and just going back to my books of false hope.

The next school day was hell.

Lucas and Holly were off sick, and Kass, despite sitting with me at breaks, and trying her best to talk to me whenever she could, she had her boyfriend, Jonah, attached to her at the hip. Or should I say the mouth.

At lunch I told her I was going to the library, she laughed and said "Gonna research more voodoo witchy stuff?" which earned me a weird look from Jonah. I laughed and replied with "Something like that."

I didn't go to the library, instead I went to the dried out football pitch that nobody ever seemed to play on.

Matty was at his usual table with his usual friends, they were messing around and making jokes and laughing loudly.

I sat down on the grass, crossing my legs over and pulling my jeans up with the belt loops.

I opened up my bag and got out what I had figured out to be my favourite one of my mom's Voodoo books.

I got to the page I was on the night before and began reading it quickly. Skimming anything that I didn't feel was important.

Matty's laughter distracted me. I wished I was the one making him laugh that loudly. I wished he'd notice me...

I buried myself deeper into my book, hoping to forget about him, which wasn't going very well to begin with, never mind when he actually walked right past me and tripped on my foot.

I looked up at him.

"Oh, fuck, sorry." he said awkwardly, looking down at me.

"No, it's alright... It was, um, it was my fault." I replied, quickly shutting the book and hiding it under my bag.

"Hey, you're the fringe girl!" he laughed, I did the same.

"Um, yeah, yeah. You're the guy. With the, um, hair." I wanted to punch myself so hard. Until my face resembled five day old, baked in the hot summer sun, road kill.

He subconsciously dragged his hands through his hair and laughed.

"Yeah. Right. I've really got to go. There's this girl who I'm supposed to be meeting in a minute, we're gonna, well, we're gonna skip. She's fucking hot, probably not girlfriend material, but apparently she's great in, you don't wanna hear about that. Sorry. So can you not tell anyone you saw me?" he asked.

I felt disappointed, but I nodded my head.

"I don't tell people much. So you're safe for now, unless in the future you do something that really annoys me, then I'll probably grass you up,but you're alright for the minute."

He laughed.

"I guess I'll have to remember not to get on your bad side. Bye, fringe girl." he waved.

"Bye." I said, laughing quietly as he ran off.

I frowned.

Maybe the voodoo thing wouldn't work after all, it was a ridiculous idea.

But he was so gorgeous and funny and- fuck.

I sighed loudly and dragged my hands through my hair, probably completely ruining my bangs.

I thought back to the time that Matty had brushed his hand through my hair and smiled a little bit.

------

That afternoon, after school, I went around a couple of market stalls, trying to find the things that I needed to make a Voodoo doll of Matty.  It felt weird, but not as weird as it did when I actually made it that night.

I rushed into the house when I arrived back from the market and ran up to my bedroom and locked the door behind me, I wasn't entirely sure why, though. My mom and dad were still out, so nobody would have come in.

I looked around my room, I always kept it quite tidy, there were only a couple of shirts on the floor from that morning when I couldn't decide on what to wear.

I picked them up and threw them onto my bed and then I walked over to my desk.

I set everything out on one side and I looked at it and sighed. I shut my eyes for a minute and exhaled through my nose.

"Oh my god." I whispered to myself quietly, looking at the things.

It took time, but soon enough, I had made a small Matty out of foam, wool, and various other things.

This was truly where my troubles began.
