Prologue

"Do you feel guilty?"

"No... I mean, why should I?"

Maybe things right now would be different if the first of October had been different.

October, my favorite fucking month. Not that I'm one of those holiday-obsessed people, no, never. I just enjoy the feeling of this specific month. Living in Salem only made this feeling stronger.

You see, having tales of witch trails as my bedtime stories and my family being extremely fond with the 'evil roots' of our origins for as long as I could remember, only made my love for darkness grow.

If you are still wondering, I'm not one of those goths either, the kind of people who use Halloween as an excuse to dress the way they want. I'm average, a regular person, who you won't see making any prophecies about the end of the world, or cursing anyone. To be very honest, I didn't even know how to do anything involving witchcraft.

Well, I had never tried.

Going back to the events of October the first, it was a normal day. I followed my daily routine, excited with the start of the month.

I got up, I got dressed into normal clothes, I went downstairs and ate my normal breakfast of cereal in one of my family's antique bowls we had inherited from my grandmother when she passed away, I got my things ready for school, then I left.

I walked through the crowded hallway, normally. Occasionally bumping into people who wouldn't even bother apologizing. Not that it was needed, nothing could bring me down that day.

I opened the grey locker door, revealing my messy locker, full of papers and unreturned library books.

"A wise, and rather attractive man once told me that lockers reflect the inner personality of whoever is using them." I heard someone say, instantly knowing who it was. "And by your locker all I can tell is that you are a very disturbed person." I smiled, turning my head to meet with the smirking figure of my friend, Lucas. "I'm just telling the truth."

"And by yours I can tell that you are a flamboyant cocksucker." I replied sassily, making him laugh.

"Oh that was good Sirena." Lucas praised my answer, while adjusting the strap of his heavy, book filled, blue shoulder bag.

"When am I not good?" I laughed, closing the locker's door, and sticking my tongue out to my friend.

"Someone's overly happy today." He said to me as our other friends - Holly and Kass - approached us.

Both of them greeted us, already telling their countless adventures that had taken place the weekend before.

"Is it me or is it excessively warm today?" Kass complained, as she threw all of her bags down and lied on the dry football field grass. Copying her actions, I sat beside her, taking a moment to watch the students enjoying their recess.

"I'm pretty sure it's only you." I replied. "Shut up now, I need to find him in the sea of people."

"Please stop stalking him." Lucas said, before taking a seat next to me.

I was searching for someone, not anyone though. Far from it. I was seeking Matthew Healy, also known as my crush since 7th grade. Somewhere between his mysterious look and his boldness made me have an irrational attraction to him. People usually don't keep crushes for long, but for some reason I just couldn't get over him.

I clearly remember the day we met. The confused new boy from Manchester or somewhere in England, coming to the wrong school building and bumping into the quiet girl. "Nice fringe, it's a bit long, though." He told me, brushing his hands trough my bangs, moving them aside. Never since that day I had either spoken to him, or even thought of getting rid of my bangs.

"It's not stalking, it's caring." I said, finally spotting him chatting with a group of friends. "But he'll never notice me." I thought out loud, before sighing hopelessly. He was a Senior, while I was only a Freshman. I bet he didn't even remember me.

"If you like him so much, why don't you simply put a spell on him?" Holly suggested, before taking a large bite of her apple, accompanied by a comically loud crunching noise. "Or make a voodoo doll or something. I bet your mom knows about it."

Even though I knew it was a crazy idea, I kept thinking about it. It made sense, and it was harmless. If it didn't work, then that would be it, and if it did... well, I'd finally be able to be with him.

As far as I was aware, he didn't have a girlfriend at that moment either, so it wouldn't ruin anything like that.

Holly was joking, I could tell by the tone of her voice, so I simply laughed quietly and continued staring subtly at Matty.

He laughed loudly at something his friend said, I sucked my lips into my mouth at the sound of his happiness.

He took a bite of his sandwich and groaned, loudly again before tossing it in the bin with obvious distaste.

He turned around and caught my eyes for a moment, not that he could really see them thanks to my overgrown bangs.

He turned back around quickly when one of his friends started trying to dry hump him. He laughed loudly again.

That was the moment I decided to do some research about voodoo.
