Cody and his beloved wife were trying years for a baby. Twice they fell pregnant. Twice Cody’s wife miscarried. It looked as though they’d never have a child. Saddened, they carried on with their lives.

One day, Cody met someone at work.

An adorable little abandoned puppy was homeless and looking to be adopted. So Cody adopted him!

He was a lively, fun-loving little pooch. A real find.

Inquisitive, loving, intelligent…

But something wasn’t right. He wasn’t 100%. So they took their new dog – now named ‘Rooster Cogburn’ – to the vet.

But it wasn’t good news.

The vet told them all about the long list of problems that Rooster had. It wasn’t what Cody wanted to hear.

Firstly, Rooster was profoundly deaf. The vet decided that he must’ve been mistreated by a previous owner.

He had stunted growth which was more than likely due to malnutrition.

Rooster also had massive cataracts and damaged pupils from blows to the back of his head.

He had severe stomach ulcers too.

And finally, he had oral fistulas from rotting teeth. The poor little thing.

Rooster’s new family – and their vet – fixed him up as best they could and set him up with a new life. It was onwards and upwards.

They had lots of fun together as a family unit. Some beautiful times. But he could never fully recover and, eventually, had to succumb to his various ailments…

‘I watched the greatest friend, most loving pet and the most heroic fighter I’ve ever met sink into a well deserved final nap while his mother and I held his paws. I never thought I could love a pet as much as I loved him; as much as we loved him. Everyone who met him instantly loved him.’ Said Cody.

”His vets, our friends, a theatre full of patrons when he performed a walk-on role in a play. He truly was one of a kind. We hope that we gave him enough good memories to wipe out any bad ones that came before.’
