I.
Goku stared into the balls of fire clinging onto the stellate landscape lining the outskirts of the arena. The awesome energy in the stars breathing fire and exhaling blinding light shifted the bruised teeth of Goku into a smile. He was amongst them all, the powerful fighters who he dreamt of one day battling with like a kid staring into the incomprehensible energy harnessed by the moon's glow. "The moon," Goku thought, "the power the moon harnesses; the destruction, chaos and untamed power of the Sun." He was a prisoner to that thirst for combat before; slaughtering his grandpa with the reflection of the Sun in the Moon shimmering on his great ape chest.
Was Goku merely a slave to that desire again? Has the wondrous power of the Gods been fueling his passion to grow stronger? Has Goku subjected his universe to unprecedented calamities because he chooses to try and harness that power of the Gods for himself? A tear cleaves the dried blood on Goku's cheek, it escapes in silence; no whimpering or acknowledgement of its presence. He has no strength left to accompany it with further lamentation; however, the power of the sorrow leaves Goku breathless. Suddenly, the pain in his chest calls out,
"Gohan!" Goku's voice disappears on the ill-lit terrain. Only loose stone still victims to sudden spikes in power level answer back as they fall to the ground.
"Oh, did one of the monkeys jumping on the bed fall off and bump his head? Has the saiyan monkey no primal instinct to gather now that he's bested? What a shame, I get an awful good kick out of you monkeys and your persistence."
Goku's smile returns and even the breath cutting through his teeth roar in pain, "I've been meaning to thank you, Frieza."
"Speaking in comfort will grant you no pity monkey. I mean to kill you when this is over, and I don't need you crying unless it is my tail strangling the tears out of your eyes. Why, why're you looking at me like that?"
Goku's surprised at the tone shift of the inquiry, he relaxes his gaze once again on the endless sky surrounding them. "I've been meaning to thank you for fighting along side me. But I won't be fighting you in this life, Frieza."
The red in Frieza's eyes roll over into crimson and the purple of his blood dilutes his pale body in a florid rage. "Very well," Frieza stores his attempt at being amicable in an incredulous smirk. "I'll just have to kill your son. How does the saying go, 'Monkey see, monkey do?' I think you're beginning to rub off on me." Frieza's laugh is interrupted before it stumbles on one of the cracks in his throat.
"Frieza!" Goku stands over the villain with his throbbing voice. But then, it's there, as clear as the lakes he used to catch fish in with his monkey tail. The red of Friezas eyes and the evil of his stare, Goku understood it and reasoned with it effortlessly in the moment he held the alien captivated with his solemnity. "You won't be needing me anymore Frieza. My name, my heritage and the day I beat you all those years ago is nothing to today. You're an awful being devised of evil and everything that is wrong. But you're still needed by others, Frieza. The universe is counting on you to win," Goku looks down at his hands. "I can't be there for it." Goku lowers his head to where his vision clouds with blood. "This is goodbye."
"What, wa—," Frieza listened to Goku for the first time. Goku's voice no longer echoed in his mind freely in aided torment to fuel Frieza's rage and subsequent power. He was a being that glided beyond right and wrong and rested somewhere within where good tries to attain and below where evil attempts to drag that good to. "No, no come back you fool. You fool!" Frieza illuminates the arena with his torrential golden aura and stalks the shadows of the ruined battleground. Frieza's uncontrolled search bashes Lord Beerus into his line of sight, "Don't just sit there licking your paws! Tell that insolent monkey to reveal himself or I will blow up this arena!" A glorious flame sporadically gives into a wave of force that nearly splits the stage in two. Frieza looks down at the rugged stage enchanted by color.

Gohan's fist nestles itself in Jiren's palm like a coffin in its grave. The result of the shockwave raises all the traces of blood and sweat off the ground and in that very instant allows the droplets to disintegrate under its heat.
"Gohan?" Goku walks to where he senses his son, but he feels something foreign in his power as if it were so chaotic the thought of it garnered confusion.
"Goku!" Android 17 leaps from a nearby plateau, "I told him not to but he wouldn't listen."
"Don't worry, seventeen."
"But I thought the plan was to wait out the time since there's four of us and one of him."
Goku nods his head with eyes closed as indifferent emotions feud in his mind, "With Jiren's immense power, I just don't see him letting us win."
"So I was hiding like a coward for nothing?"
"Coward? I call a coward someone who murders innocent people and destroys cities and ends lives for fun. And someone who hopes nothing rises up against them. Seventeen, don't let my son fight alone."
17 looks back at Goku, and he sees his sister in the stands behind him. "I won't."
A green lightning slides through the crevices of the floor and shows itself only inches away from Jiren's face. Jiren grips the wavering light like Zeus and hurls it at Gohan.
Gohan skates along the aura of energy still shimmering off of 17's body and fires a barrage of empty blows to Jiren's immovable stance. A knee to the stomach draws the white into the pupil of Gohan's eyes and he staggers to the floor while hoping the ground will be somewhere beneath him when he crashes through it.
Again, Gohan grits his teeth, plants his feet and fires at Jiren's face with nothing being punished but the air around him. Jiren moves past Gohan and leaves him with what feels like thousands of blows all more devastating than the last. Gohan still stands, cradling his loose teeth with his tongue and flexing the blood back into his muscles.
Goku tries to raise his power level, but he can't, he can't fight. Goku watches Jiren dart past 17 with each contortion of the Android's body leaving 17 more motionless than the last until he is floating under Jiren's will.
Each time 17 falls, Jiren catches him and breaks through his energy barrier only to punt him in the air again. 17 opens his eyes when the punches end, and he feels himself cradled by the ground. Then, the slight pressure of a tug and the the release of a pull; 17 watches the ligaments of his arm reach out for their sockets as Jiren holds them like two trophies. 17 falls back, screaming and gnawing at the air in pain out of the arena.
Gohan hears 17's cries in agony reverberate beneath the arena and transport to the benches where 17 still suffers. With his back to the cries, Gohan lowers his head in defeat. Jiren tosses 17's limbs next to Gohan's feet and a pool of blood dampens his shoes.
The benches go numb aside from 17 rolling in pain and lamenting his limbs. Vegeta knocks 17 out and cauterizes his wounds with a swift energy blast.
III.
"Thank you, Vegeta. I was going to erase him myself if you hadn't done that." Beerus speaks to Vegeta without looking in his direction.
"You're terrified, I see it in your pussy cat eyes, you're afraid your existence is near its end." Vegeta turns to him.
"And I damn well should be with sorry excuses for warriors like you defending my universe!"
"Your universe? I've actually got a claim to it. I'm a direct offspring of its ferociousness that breeds fear. While you sleep waiting to destroy, I wait. I wait for moments like this where you feel what it's like for fear to engorge your heart the way it did mine. Go ahead, kill me if you want Lord Beerus, it would be like putting this universe out of its misery. You hear that Kakarot! It's over, it's always been a joke from the start." Vegeta sits back down to contemplate his words while the others look at one another. Krillin walks over to Vegeta and places a hand on his shoulder. "Go back to your wife." Vegeta murmurs.
"Are you sure?" Krillin looks back to 18 who stares at her bloodied knuckles in despair.
Vegeta stares Krillin the eyes, and Krillin wonders if the saiyan's eyes were always as glossy of a black as they are now, "Yeah."
