"Okay, you can open your eyes now." Hawks lifted his hands away from Dabi's face. He felt his lips curving up into a smirk as he slowly turned around to face the winged hero. It seemed that Hawks had led them into a large field with rolling hills and pale wildflowers underneath the night sky. Hidden within the flowers, soft chirps of sleepy crickets filled the air as cicadas sang from the trees below. Dabi could hear the hoot of an owl as it would occasionally join in on the nightly chorus. A warm gust of breeze blew past them and he had to flip his hair out of his eyes. It's a clear night sky, not a cloud to be spotted for miles as the moon shone brightly around them.
"Y'know, if you wanted to get me alone for yourself all you h-" Dabi's words died upon his lips as he looked at Hawks. Dabi would never admit it out loud but his breath had been stolen away from him upon beholding the man before him that had been bathed in the gentle light of the moon. Under the twinkling stars and the full moon, Dabi could almost trick himself into believing that Hawks was an angel rather than a hero. There was something so ethereal the way that his wings had almost started to glow a soft red and how his blond hair had shone like a golden halo that framed his face. When Hawks smiled so serenely at him, Dabi's heart had stuttered.
"I took you out here to look at the stars, not me." Hawks gently teased and shifted his weight, leaning in closer towards Dabi. He could only hum, entrapped by Hawks' honey colored eyes and he didn't want to break away. He had feared that if he had, he would wake up and all of this would've been a dream.
"Oh?" He murmured as he shifted closer towards Hawks. "What if I said that I would rather look at you than the stars?" He had chuckled when he saw Hawks roll his eyes.
"I'd call you a fool." Hawks simply stated, however, the smile on his lips said otherwise. Dabi watched as Hawks sat down and he followed suit. Sitting next to the man, Dabi finally looked away from him and up to the stars. Being so far from the typical hubbub of Musutafu's bright city lights and loud nightlife, Dabi had forgotten the sheer beauty of the stars above.
He leaned back on his hands and studied the stars. Suddenly, he felt so small compared to the endless stretch of the night sky that had been dotted with countless twinkling stars. To Dabi, there was something so memorizing in the constellations. Through and through, he would constantly work under the guise of night but had never actually stopped to take the time and look up to the sky. To see it as it was for the first time was breathtaking and to see it with Hawks, it was an intimate and precious moment to him.
"I've always wanted to just spread my wings and fly among the stars, y'know?" Hawks eventually broke the silence between them. From the corner of Dabi's eyes, he watched as Hawks reached a hand towards the night sky as if to take hold of one of the countless stars above. Dabi's own hand had moved and gently took hold of Hawks'. They had fallen silent for a moment, both men looking down at their entwined hands. Dabi glanced up from their hands and back up at Hawks, his breath had hitched and his heart skipped a beat when he saw the soft expression Hawks wore when looking down at their hands.
"Then what's stopping you from doing that?" Hawks met Dabi's gaze and smiled softly at him. No matter how many times Dabi had seen the man next to him smile, it had always sent his heart racing.
"Besides not being able to breathe in space?" Hawks had rhetorically asked with a chuckle and Dabi only rolled his eyes. Both men had fallen into a comfortable silence as Dabi turned back to the night sky. As they sat together in the warm summer night they became lost in their own thoughts Hawks suddenly hums.
"I think it's because I wouldn't want to be lonely up there." Dabi gently squeezed Hawks' hand and looked back over to him. In that moment, Dabi had become bewitched underneath Hawks' gaze.
He had lived a life where it had been the norm to deny himself the small things in life, which had included the simple pleasure of beauty. As he had looked ever deeper into Hawks' eyes with their endless golden expanse that had held the reflection of stars, he had found his breath stolen once more by the hero. Dabi had to rack his mind for what he was going to say, still drowning in the man's eyes.
"Who said you'd have to be lonely up there?" Dabi quietly asked. Hawks had smiled at his question and with his free hand cupped Dabi's cheek tenderly. Hawks only hummed softly as Dabi leaned into the man's touch.
"Maybe if you ask nicely, I'll go along for the ride." He gently teased, smiling when it was Hawks' turn to roll his eyes.
"Yeah, because 'hey, wanna fly with me to the moon?' totally sounds like a normal thing to ask." Dabi's smile had only grown at Hawks' statement and he moved closer to the shorter man.
"I dunno, little bird, I think I like the sound of that." He had whispered against Hawks' ear and pulled away in time to see a rosey pink blush that had dusted along Hawks' cheeks. Hawks had looked up to him and ran his thumb across his cheek.
"Okay, how about if I said let's get married on the moon?" Hawks asked as he smiled almost shyly at his own question. Dabi leaned forward, his lips brushing gently against Hawks before he had pulled back with a smile of his own.
"I think I like the sound of that. Though, I don't think we'd ever be able to fly to the moon but I don't mind." Dabi paused and kissed the top of Hawks' head. "Being here with you is all I need."
