Coffee And Surgery

The next morning I had, in fact, woken with quite the headache.  Waves of nausea rocked through my stomach.  I sat up as a spinning sensation twirled the world around me.  Knocking echoed from the door across the tent. It almost sounded as loud as the explosions on my drive here.

"Good morning, doctor," BJ spoke up

"Not so loud."

"I'm talking at my normal volume.  Really is your first hangover, huh?"

"How do you make it stop? My head is pounding."

"Here's water and two aspirin.  That's a start.  Get dressed and meet me outside. Even though it's disgusting, some food'll do ya good."

BJ left the tent as I sat for a moment.  My head was starting to feel a little normal.  I changed from the pajamas into the standard issue greens.  After a few minutes I stumbled out of the tent.

"You look like a ray of sunshine," BJ joked.

"I feel like I was hit by a truck."

"Let's get you to the mess hall before Hawk sees.  He was rather jealous last night after I walked you back."

"You were only being a good friend.  Plus someone who brags about his amazing wife, and adorable girl, is not really trying to take me to bed.  I would assume."

"He just gets jealous sometimes."

"At least he's got being chief surgeon going for him," I shrugged my shoulders.

The mess hall had thinned out from the morning rush.  A scoop of eggs fell onto my plate, some toast, and what looked like bacon - no one was sure what it really was though.  We sat down at a table across from each other.  My fork poked at the eggs.

"Better eat up if you want to shake that hangover."

I took a big bite of the eggs.  For powdered eggs it wasn't so bad.  Like eating a mushy, egg flavored sponge.  It had a texture that was lacking something from properly made scrambled eggs.  BJ and I struck up a conversation about our respective homes.  The headache, and nausea, clearing from my body as I ate.  A cup of coffee really helped get me going.   Just as we were finishing our meal Hawkeye walked in.  He looked exhausted.  He grabbed a cup of coffee and settled at the head of the table.

"Rough night?" BJ asked.

"You two are spending a lot of time together."

His mouth opened to make another smart remark.  I shoved a piece of toast in his mouth.  BJ laughed while I took a long sup of my coffee.

"Jealousy isn't a good look on you, Hawkeye." I remarked.

"I see you're in a much better mood."

"I need to apologize.  I shouldn't have acted the way I did yesterday."  I took a long sip of my coffee.  "Maybe when you get back to the states you should sell that gin you made."

"So you'll come over for a drink with Beej, but not me?"

"He was helping me through losing that patient.  I'm pretty sure I'm never drinking again."

"Everyone says that," Hawkeye said, the jealousy gone in an instant, "How about you and I have dinner some time?"

"We can start with coffee.  But only when you promise you can hold a conversation without trying to get me on a famous Hawkeye date."

"What do you-"

"Some of the nurses mentioned something.  They saw how I got upset with you. They told me all about how you're always a big flirt."
