The next thing I saw was the worn, green tent above me. My head turned quickly noting that I was back in the VIP tent. The door creaked open, I couldn't see past the dresser that was next to the bed. It closed quietly. I could hear something set against the wooden dresser. My head lifted, feeling a little light headed. Hawkeye strolled over to me. For once he looked like a real doctor. He leaned on the dresser as I looked him over. He must have come over from post op with a quick trip to the mess hall. The white coat hanging over his uniform really did him a favor.
"Sleeping beauty finally woke up?" He sighed dramatically. "I was hoping it'd have to come down to a kiss."
"Only if its in a confined space," I smirked, knowing this weakness of his.
"That hurts. But I didn't pass out."
"Fair. Were you on post op duty?"
"A few wounded came in. Your patient had to go back in when we got back."
"Why didn't you wake me?" I rushed to stand up losing my balance almost instantly. Hawkeye took a quick step to catch me. "Oooh, my head feels like it's a mile away."
"You gave more than the usual blood donation. If you hadn't your patient would have died in that cave." He helped me sit down again and passed the juice toward me. "You need to rest for now."
I drank a good portion of the juice in one sip. My hands were pretty shaky. They must have needed a little more to keep him going. He sat down next to me taking my free wrist into his hand. His hands were warm. I could feel a sudden tingling rush through my cheeks. He stared at his watch, he was checking my heart rate. I told myself to stay calm, but I suddenly felt like I couldn't. Maybe it was residual anxiety from the shelling. Or because I had to spend the night in a cramped cave with a needle sticking out of my arm.
"Your hearts going a little faster than normal. Are you feeling okay?" Hawkeye smiled. "Or have my good looks finally worn you down to agreeing to a date?"
"Don't be so stupid," I laughed.
"Don't forget you were asking for me to hang by your side while you gave blood."
"I thought it would help you stay calm."
"Of course."
"I don't need to explain myself to you. Why are you even in my tent? I gave a little blood."
"You need to recover. Beej and Margaret have already stopped by to check on you. You were out cold for at least ten hours."
"I'm sorry. I must be irritable because of everything."
"What you need is a good meal."
"Know where we can get one?"
Hawkeye flashed a smile. He stood up before making rather amusing joke about the quality of the food. I tried to stand up so I could get food. But Hawkeye wasn't having my stubbornness. He would come back with something in a few minutes. I tried to protest but he walked on as if I wasn't trying to get him to stop. I fell back against the cot. My body was heavy, but if it saved a life it was for a good cause. After a few minutes of sitting on the cot in the bit of silence we had at the 4077, Hawkeye came back into the tent.
"You didn't have to bring all of that." I laughed looking at the tray.
Next to the pile of rehydrated eggs was fresh fruit. From my few days here I realized such treats weren't a common luxury. Hawkeye extended the tray to me. Even though I wanted a cup of coffee I couldn't have one. He was concerned with me getting dehydrated.
"Eat up, one of us will be back to check on you."
"You look exhausted. Did you get any sleep?" I asked, noticing the yawn he tried to hide.
"It was hard to sleep in that cave." He wagged a finger in my direction."You have some sort of vice grip, don't you? As soon as that needle was in your arm I couldn't get out of your grasp on my hand."
"Sorry. I never did care for shots, or needles."
"It's fine. When are we going on that date you promised?"
I pointed my fork at him after taking a bite of eggs. "I never promised a date. I might've passed out but I remember what I said. Why are you so intent on going on a date?"
"I like you."
"Hawk, I think you like the idea of me. I'm smart, I can outdo you in surgery-"
"You do not."
"Come on. You want one thing and I'm not here for that. I guess that's why I'm avoiding a date."
"I don't want one thing."
"Hawk, I'm sorry. I've heard more stories proving that to be true than not."
"You barely know me," he huffed.
"I'm willing to give you a chance, but you know why I am here. I've had to really put a lot of effort to get where I am. I'm not throwing this away for a short lived fling."
"Fling? Fling? I will have you know that I am quite capable of-" He sighed, noting the expression on my face. "Am I really that much of a pest to you?"
"You aren't a pest. I rather enjoy the conversations we have. I'm just not interested in a relationship right now. I just lost my brother and moved halfway across the world. All to enlist in some pointless war. I'm sorry this isn't a priority for me."
"Not right now? Aha!" I jumped at the sudden exclamation of his words. "Alright. Then I will wait."
"Oh, Hawk. Don't make promises you can't keep. You don't seem like the type that can quit this lifestyle."
"Is that a challenge?"
"Just an observation."
"You are something else."
"Go get some sleep, Hawk. I'll see ya around."
"Take it easy. I don't want to wake up to find you pushed yourself too hard."
"I will. Scout's honor."
Hawkeye shook his head with a smile. He flicked his hand in a slight waving motion. I finished the food. The fruit was the last thing I saved. I don't know what Hawkeye had to do to get that, but it couldn't have been an easy pull. Even for someone who held a pretty high rank around here. He was trying, but surely I wasn't brought here just to meet some guy. My brother's death couldn't have been for something so trivial. I picked up a pen and paper after I finished eating. It was time to write home. For the rest of the day I stared at the page that read.
Dear Mom and Dad...
I know this is short, but I have been struggling to continue writing lately. I hope you enjoy the short blurb and I will try to have more ready for the next update. Promise.
