Hey guys, author here. I need to say I appreciate so much that you've voted and commented on the quality of this piece of work. I'm glad, so glad, I'm not the only Hawkeye lover out there. I don't write fully in canon do please forgive that. Thank you all so much for the support.
It was a quiet night. I enjoyed a dinner with Margaret and a few nurses. They occupied enough space to keep Hawkeye at bay. He looked a little let down to find me with this group. He sat next to BJ across the mess tent. We shared a few glances, but nothing else. One of the nurses caught me staring.
"He's easy on the eyes. But Hawkeye really isn't the long term type. Once he gets what he wants he'll be on to the next new thing that comes by," she explained with a smile.
"I've already set boundaries. I'm not here to date-"
"That won't stop him," another chimed in.
"He doesn't give up. I don't think he knows what rejection really means."
"I get the point. I'm pretty set in my ways though. Isn't there anything to talk about besides Hawkeye and his flirtatious tendacies?"
"Finally," Margaret spoke up, "why don't you tell us about where you're from?"
So we all talked about where we were from. Within the confines of this small camp we were brought together. From the east coast to the west coast and a few stops in between. We talked about our families. Margaret was an army brat through and through. Her father was also in the military and she seemed quite proud of her rank. She had a confidence about her that I admired. You could tell she had been through a lot to end up as strong as she was now.
After dinner I was invited by a few of the nurses to the officers club. Which really wasn't exclusive to officers only. There was something different about this place. I expected it to be rules and regulations. But I guess people needed something to deal with the injuries we saw. I declined. This was my first night on post op duty. I had barely been here, but I think I had done a good enough job of proving myself. After dinner I changed into another uniform. My other one was going out with a laundry service to be cleaned. Because I didn't travel with much Radar offered to procure some more for me. I walked out of my tent to find BJ and Hawkeye sitting in lawn chairs outside of the swamp. They were drinking the homemade liquor. The thought of ingesting that alone gave me a terrible stomach ache.
"Off to your first night of post op?" BJ laughed. He and Hawkeye seemed to be a little tipsy already. "It's my night off, so don't come to me for help."
"You're drinking? What if wounded come in?"
"You're quick, and efficient. Your turn time is better than either of ours. And you're doing everything how we would."
"Trust me, if that happens we'll be fine," Hawkeye mulled the thought before taking a sip. The bright, fun look in his eyes fading. "We always are."
"Well, it's nice to know some people consider me good at what I do. I appreciate that. Have a drink for me, boys."
I strolled past them with a new found confidence. When I arrived into post op, there was a nurse walking through. She smiled as I pulled a white coat over my uniform. Sad that I had to travel half away across the world to get the respect of my colleagues.
The night was quiet. No injured. Everyone in recovery seemed to be doing well. Although one man would not accept I was the doctor. He had quite a bad attitude about it. I ordered him a sedative when he started waking some of the other patients. The nurse administered it since I was not allowed anywhere near him. As for the others, they didn't seem to care. If they made it back to the lines, or went home, they accepted me. I sat down next to a young man who was recovering from a shelling that took out a few of his comrades. While I checked his vitals he came to a little.
