Daniels POV
April 2nd 1912"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Daniel, Happy birthday to you." my family cheered as I made a wish. Officially 19 I thought to myself.
It was an eventful day. I woke up like any other day. I got up, brushed my teeth, put on my overalls that my mother had made me the previous winter, and went out to the field. It was still planting season, so my family and I were hard at work everyday to make sure the crops were in good enough condition to grow. We needed the money, and the leftover food for our family to feast on. 4 hours later I was inside taking a shower with the help of my mother. Sounds strange for me as a 19 year old to have the help of my mother, but we were poor. We had gather water from a near by pond, and then scoop it up with a bucket to dump over us. We made our own soap products, my mother was quite the crafter, but I was thankful for what I had, I wouldn't want it any other way.
Every fall around harvesting season me, my mother, father, sister, & brother would gather our crops to walk about a 3 day journey to town to sell them. And the leftovers we had by the 2nd day, we would take back home with us and leave that to feast on until the next planting season.
~~~
I got up in the middle of the night due to hearing rustling downstairs. I couldn't tell what time it was, probably somewhere around 2AM. I stepped down the long corridor, when I heard voices near by. "What's the plan?" I heard an unfamiliar man whisper "We grab the family, tie them up, and have fun from there." what? "what are we gonna do with th-" my eyes widened "Arnold hush. I don't know if they're awake or not." "oh right."
I heard steps coming my way. I hid in a broom closet near by slowly creeping the door shut. I wanted to get out, but I couldn't leave my family behind. I'm nothing without them.
The door swung open. "There you are." I was dragged out of the closet & into my mother and fathers room, the man who I assumed was Arnold headed to the other bedroom where my sibling lay sound asleep. Tears pricked at my eyes as I watched the other man grab my parents and tie them up as they screamed for help. By now I was full on sobbing. I didn't know what to do. The man was much stronger than me, and held a very firm grasp. Arnold came into the room with my Anna & Christian. He tied them up, but Arnold just held me back by my hands in the end. I was quite confused.
"Now what we've all been waiting for!" "Do it Mike!" Arnold said. I stayed crying shaking my head violently not being able to imagine what events were going to occur. Mike pulled a gun out and aimed it at my fathers head. I was lost at this point, I had not a single clue on what to think. My thoughts wandered about. I couldn't grasp ahold of all of this happening. My mother started screaming. "Shut up before I hurt you too!" My mom began to sob. Mike pulled out a knife and stabbed my moms stomach. I could see her tense up, and her limbs become weak. Then a gun shot was fired. no. There my mother lay on the ground. Choking on her own blood. "Mama." I said in a soft hushed whisper. "She's all gone now there mate." Arnold whispered in my ear. I could feel his breath on my neck. Another gunshot was fired. I closed my eyes not wanting to see my father dead on the ground.
"Now for you boy." Mike said turning his attention to me. "Name?" "Da-Daniel." I stuttered out still suffering from the after math of my sobs. "Now I just want to warn you there son." Mike said with a small but audible chuckle. "This is gonna hurt. A lot." My breath hitched. I tightly closed my eyes preparing myself for the pain I was going to experience soon. I felt a sharp pain around my mouth area. I opened my eyes to see Arnold slowly pulling a knife away from my skin. I began to scream from pain, only for this pain for become much more severe. My mouth ripped open more than Arnold had cut it. Blood dripped down my body. The boys getting their fair share, Mike did the same thing to the other side.
I was in so much pain that I began to feel numb. On top of that all the blood loss made me feel very, very weak. But I wasn't gonna give up, not yet anyways. Not with my sibling watching me.
Arnold grabbed a box of matched lighting one. He attempted to hold my eyes open as I struggled to release from his grasp. I felt a sharp pain in my leg. "Disobey again Daniel and see just what happens."
Arnold began burning my eyes with the match. I was in so much pain, it was unimaginable. I didn't know how much longer I could take it.
I soon felt very weak. The last thing I remember is the faint screams of my siblings begging me not to leave them.
