Ruby's pov

"And you're certain this is a wise decision? For all we know this could just be a trap to lure you in!" Pepper says to me as I get ready to leave.

I've spent the whole night reading over the letter and cracking the code to where I can find this demon that's taken Eva. I would've left sooner but trying to locate this place on the map was also quite the task. So I'm only able to leave now, at sunrise, travelling about three hours away to an unknown place that seems deserted according to maps. I just pray that I'm not going to the wrong place.

"It's just a risk I have to take. I can't just sit here if there's a chance that Eva is in danger. I have to bring her back. I'll just have to take this man's word and hope he's not going to do something harmful."

I see her try to find something to say, something to convince me not to go. But it's pretty clear I've already made up my mind. And I'm pretty sure that she wants to see Eva safely back home just as much as I do.

"Well then, I just hope that you know what you're doing and that you get there and back safely with Evangeline. Don't do anything stupid and stay level-headed. You know how you are when you get over-emotional."

"I promise to come back with Eva and we'll be both safe and sound."

I look at her worried face and hug her before stepping out into the cool autumn air.

I get into my carriage and the coachman almost immediately takes off, knowing very well that I'm in a rush to get to my destination.

There's nothing I can do now but wait the excruciating next three hours it'll take to finally see my Eva. Not that it hasn't already been awful not having her safe with me. This demon had better have a very good reason for his punishable actions, or else there will be hell to pay.

Eva's pov

I try once again to jiggle the large front door of this extravagant house. And I once again find that it's still locked and won't even budge slightly despite my efforts.

"For the hundredth time, my dear, the door will not open for you. You're not leaving until your dear Countess shows up to speak with me. Now come, your tea is ready and I've found that book you'd asked for."

I roll my eyes and sigh as I follow my captor to his library. I must say, this is not what I thought being kidnapped would be like.

Lucian Walker, though still smug and slightly creepy, isn't that bad of a demon. Not as bad as I previously thought, at least.

Once we had arrived at his gothic style home, he let me free of the spell he'd used to ensure I wouldn't try escape from the carriage to our destination. He even apologized for frightening me and admitted he just wanted to mess with me for some humour.

I didn't like that one bit and retaliated by throwing things and running around his home trying to escape. He just watched me amused until I tired myself out.

That's when he offered me something to eat and drink, and though I knew it was quite possibly another trap, I couldn't deny my hunger any longer. As I reluctantly ate, he explained that he meant no ill will in taking me and simply wanted to gain Ruby's attention.

He told me he has even ensured that she knew where to find me and that I'd be safe until she arrives, just as long as she agrees to speak with him.

So we waited. And in that time, approximately since lunch yesterday, we've been quite surprisingly somewhat friendly to one another.

We played chess to pass time and he allowed me to explore his home a little, leading to me finding his library. Of course, I still tried my luck in escaping but those attempts were fruitless.
