Ruby's POV
It's silent. Neither Evangeline nor I saying anything yet as we sit in Lucian's study, waiting for him to return with something he said he needed to retrieve for this impromptu meeting. Well, not that impromptu, more like manipulated.
I look over at Eva, still trying to make sure she hasn't been harmed in any way. She's told me she's alright and she looks it too. The only thing now is that she looks worried, maybe a little tense but I assume it's because of how we got into this situation.
Sighing, I take her hand in mine, turning slightly in my seat to face her. She looks back at me holding my hand tighter as her hazel eyes gloss over slightly.
"I want to apologize... for the way I acted and the things I said. I never meant what said, I never meant to worry you nor did I want to hurt you. I was just worried and stressed and trying to protect you. But instead, I took my frustration out on you and you got taken in the midst of me trying to protect you. I'm truly sorry, my love."
Throughout my apology, I kept my eyes downcast just focusing on my hand in hers. I couldn't bare the feeling I felt when I thought I'd lost her. And the guilt of it being my fault was consuming me. I treated her like my father treated my mother and me. That's not how I want to be, never to her.
I feel her other hand on my face, feeling her raise my gaze to meet hers as she smiles gently at me, making me feel a little lighter from my heavy feelings.
"I'm sorry too. I never should've ran away. It was childish and careless and now I've gotten us into this situation. I just wanted to help you, to understand why you've been so overwhelmed. I'm here for you, I'm going to be your wife and that means I'm by your side through everything. Just trust me."
Her words make me feel better. The promise of her being with me makes me realize that I'm not alone anymore.
"And I promise to never run off when I'm angry with you." She says caressing my cheek lightly.
"And I promise to never say or do anything to hurt you and to tell you about things that I worry about."
The air between us is as it was before and I no longer have the feeling of guilt and fear. I have her and she has me. We'll get through this and then we'll get married and no longer worry about people like Lord Garret.
"I'm glad that you've made up. I was quite hoping that the tension in the room would dissipate when I left you two alone to speak. Especially with what we need to discuss."
Lucian Walker walked in with a somewhat smug smile, making his way to his seat with a little note folded up in his hand.
I regain my composure, almost rolling my eyes at the dramatic man before me. I'm still quite upset with him because of his little act. Taking Eva from me was not necessary, no matter how important he deems his news to be.
"Sir Walker, do you mind getting to the point. I do wish to return home with my fiancée sooner rather than later, I'm already doing you a favour by not punishing you for taking her by the way, and by being here." Eva squeezes my hand gently trying to calm me down.
"Oh, I understand that dear, and I'm quite grateful for your time and your mercy." He smiles at me but I notice he's being genuine.
"Now," he begins, looking a lot more serious than before as he crosses his legs and straightens his back. "I've received a message, a threat to be exact and it involves your wellbeing and the wellbeing of your dear Evangeline. It seems that a man, Lord Garrett of Eelry, has ordered one of the most dangerous hunters to bring him your head and to rid of your fiancée. And judging by what I've found already, it may be figurative or literal or maybe even both."
Evangeline gasps beside me, her grip on my hand tightening as I clench my jaw.
"Is...is this what had you worried?" She asks me softly and I nod to answer her.
"What's more is, he seems to be plotting your demise in such a manner that wouldn't leave him to deal with the consequences. He's had meetings and contacted people that he believes will assist him in his plans."
I get angrier with each word, the guts that man has is infuriating. I would've thought that he'd have gotten the point from my warning.
"How is it that you have this information?" I ask trying to remain calm.
"As I've said, he's contacted people for assistance and I happen to be one of the people he believes can help. I've got a very high status in the high courts and I've been involved in taking down very powerful and threatening people before. But It seems he's not knowledgeable of my affiliation with the supernatural, let alone that I'm supernatural myself."
He's back to being smug as I let the information sink in. Eva looks beyond worried now but I wouldn't dare ask her to sit this meeting out after promising to trust with these things.
"Anyway, He plans to discredit and tarnish your image as well as ruin your betterment and growth of your town. Then he plans to conquer it and getting rid off you."
My mind is racing, trying to think of a solution to this problematic man. I can't believe that he actually wants to challenge me in such a bold manner.
"Why are you helping me? I highly doubt it's out of the kindness of your heart if you've done something like this before." I ask sceptically. The look on his face shows me I'm right.
"Well you see, I believe that you, my dear Countess are just what the world needs. Someone that's from two different sides that can show everyone that being supernatural and not being supernatural is not that different. You can change so many things, save so many lives. Not just in your town but all over. You unique existence is the very one that'll spark a historical movement that will hopefully bring harmony to this world. I, for one, want to be part of such an event and I believe that I can be of great help in it too with my connections. So I choose to be on your side rather than of that close-minded being."
His little speech catches me slightly off guard. Sure my plans for my town are meant to be beneficial but I didn't think anything I'd do or be could be as groundbreaking as this man describes. I never thought being hybrid would be a good thing.
"I know that you may be sceptical, whether it's because of me or because you find my words unfathomable, or maybe both. But I assure you that this is all in goodwill. There's so much potential in you that could do so much more. And your dear fiancée has that potential too, gathering from the time she was here with me, she's quite the intelligent and strong young lady. You both could stop not only Lord Garret, many people like him."
Eva and I look at each, letting the words sink in and making our decision.
"What do we need to do?"
Lucian smiles, seeming glad we've listened to him. And so we spoke of what was to come and how to go about it. Lord Garret will rue the day he threatened me and my love.
