THERE were a few things that Emma Wright was certain she did not believe in; fate, destiny, or anything that entailed that her future wasn't her own. She didn't particularly enjoy the thought that somebody or some higher power controlled every aspect of the life she lived. Certain events in time didn't take place because someone other than herself willed it so. Because if It did exist it meant It abandoned every living thing It created. So everything terrible that occurred afterward, It sat there and let it happen. Her parents' murder, deaths of millions of people, and the list went on. The thought didn't sit well with her at all. So no matter how many times the school she was forced to attend tried to drill it in her, it didn't work and it wasn't going to.
Every step she had taken, every choice she made; quitting college, moving across the country for her brother's job and working all those damn days and night shifts back to back at the diner, led her to the path she was on. Sure she wasn't wealthy and sure she wanted to go back to college, but she was comfortable. She had James, a surrogate brother of sorts whose family had unofficially adopted her after she was left unwillingly in their care. But even though she wasn't in the slightest related in blood, she would prefer it above all else.
However, tables begin to turn when two brothers, who are close with James, appear in her house one morning, disrupting the very order of her life. Belief, fiction, and fact begin to blur and form a single line making her question her parents' past and ultimately her own.
