CHAPTER TWO;
AND HER WORLD SPIRALSA DOZEN THOUGHTS RAN through her mind that night. She wondered why the changes in James had been so very present but she hadn't once questioned him about it. She was correct to assume that it happened right after the case he saved the Winchesters asses all those years ago but God she was stupid to think that the case merely affected him on a lower scale. Emma spent the entire night on James floor, barely slept for five hours having continuously watching him as he slept locked up in the chains Sam and Dean refused to remove.
They had explained it to her, evidently as vaguely as they could, about the supernatural that surrounded them that was meant to be fiction but was in fact definitely real. In simple terms, the Winchester brothers, who were most certainly not cops, were supernatural hunters. They killed, exorcised or whatever term that meant maiming creatures that went bump in the night. Vampires, demons, gods, you name it they've killed most of it.
James apparently, all those years ago, had converted from the life of a regular hunter to a witch who hunted supernatural creatures. The irony right? And the woman from the night prior was apparently their dog Portia, who was actually James companion, namely a familiar. She could transform from canine to human whenever she pleased. Now she understood why she didn't eat regular dog food.
The brunette still hadn't come to terms with everything they had told her and it also didn't help that James was now a suspect to three murders. She knew she didn't have time to adjust to the ultimately overwhelming revelations but the best she could do was understand why James was as intense as he was.
It was midday, she was meant to be going to work in a few minutes but considering everything she had just learnt, she decided to take a sick day or days depending when and/or if everything would be resolved. She watched as he continued to stare almost absentmindedly at the ceiling, but she knew he was avoiding her. He obviously couldn't leave even if he wanted to and she knew that he knew she wouldn't leave, so avoiding until she said something was his best bet. But the silence was already becoming too much to bear so she sighed and looked at him. "Why didn't you ever tell me?"
"I was trying to protect you." He stated simply, glancing at her for at least a second before his eyes travelled back to the ceiling.
"Protect me? That's the oldest, and might I say the lamest excuse in the book." She scoffed at his poor excuse of an answer. He didn't even bother to justify to her why he was protecting her and that's what ticked her off. "James, I'm twenty seven. I think I'm a little too old to have you think I'm too young to handle whatever crap this is. What's the real reason?"
He sighed deeply then turned his head to face her. "Because of your parents."
"My parents?"
Emma hadn't spoken about her parents since they were murdered six years ago. It was a subject she liked to think was very fresh in her mind but honestly, she just didn't want to speak about the people who really weren't around for most, if not all, of her life. She had been in the care of the Frampton family since she was a baby. The story they had always told her was that they gave her up because they wanted her to live a better life outside theirs, but really she liked to think they didn't want her. Maybe she was being melodramatic because really, they perhaps weren't ready to raise her but she had grown and they still hadn't wanted to see her. Which didn't make sense. They had abandoned her and when they died she still hadn't gotten to know them, so the reason for James answer confused her more than any complex equation she had ever tried to solve.
"I know you think they didn't love you but for whatever reason they had for leaving you with us, with me, they did it to protect you. You were never meant to learn about this life because I swore that I wouldn't tell you. You finding out was never meant to be a part of the plan."
