CHAPTER ONE;
TABLES TURNA TWELVE HOUR SHIFT she never wanted had drained her completely that night. She knew she reeked of greasy diner food and sweat from her long day, a scent she had become accustomed to over the last decade. At that moment as she twisted the lock from the front door, her only priority was to lay in bed and undisturbed for the next seven hours.
With her messy brunette hair tied in a dishevelled bun and sunken eyes begging to come to a close, she dragged her feet across the floors of James house. Her hand seconds away from twisting the doorknob of her bedroom when her actions were interrupted from the door besides hers opening. She cringed at the loud creaks coming from the old hinges. James stepped out, completely dressed in different clothing than his usual night time attire. She watched with curious eyes as his face was void of any emotion.
James Frampton was many things; a dedicated cop, an extreme workaholic and an overall douchebag when she often picked fights with him. But he wasn't a sleep walker. In fact if anything, he valued his sleep above all else and would literally bite her ear off when she interrupted. As far as she was concerned, she hadn't made a single noise when she entered their home. So she didn't understand what he was doing up right after twelve in the morning with a stoic expression on his face.
He walked passed her, not even sparing her glance as he headed for what she assumed was the door. "Jamie?" She called out to him hoping he would respond, he hadn't. She followed him and just as he was about to open the door, she placed a hand on his shoulder in concern, worried something might actually be going on with him. "James." This time he responded, turning around and giving her a small and very tension filled smile.
"Emma", he began, her eyes narrowing at the mention of her full name, a name he rarely called her anymore. "I'm heading out for a stroll."
Her eyes narrowed further with the addition of a raised eyebrow. A stroll in evening clothes in the middle of the night? Yet another act that was completely uncharacteristic of him. "It's midnight." She stated as a matter of faculty.
"Goodbye." He uttered with his monotone voice and distant eyes. He turned around opening the door and shutting it behind him. Emma shook her head in confusion, too tired to argue or even follow. She knew he was capable of taking care of himself but that didn't stop the worry from evading her body.
She walked back to her room, the door shutting behind her, purse and apron dumped on the ground without even a second thought. The last thought on her mind before her eyes shut in exhaustion was hoping James was safe, wherever the hell he was.
When her eyes opened that morning, she was hoping to hear Portia's usual insistent bark at her door to wake her and rush her to place food in her silver bowl but that morning had been different. Instead of Portia, she heard James yelling incoherent words from his room so loudly that she was beyond shocked. James almost never yelled unless he was extremely pissed and she would know, she had been one of the recipients of said yelling. But for James to yell at this magnitude, it meant something was definitely wrong.
In a hazed frenzy, she got up running to her door and opening it just in time to catch Portia run out from James' room with her tail in between her legs and her head and ears hung low almost in shame. The sight was more than strange considering that Portia and James had this weird connection she could hardly understand and he almost never, if ever, yelled at the dog. James walked out of his room immediately after her, dark bags under his eyes and exhaustion written all over his face. That didn't stop Emma from crossing her arms over her chest and giving him a pointed glare.
