The thick smell of coffee hung in the air. I wrinkled my nose but I found the aroma quite pleasant as I sipped my cup of warm coffee. I placed the small cup down again with a faint’ chink’ as it made contact with the wooden table.
It was quarter past eleven at night and I’d walked into an 24 hour café after the break up. However I was used to it. The break ups and this café that I spent so much of my time in.
It was November and the night air was cold and bitter. I rubbed my hands together and tightened my coat around me to retain some heat.
Three tables down, the waitress with high heels that clacked loudly against the wooden floor, dropped her tray. She cursed loudly and knelt onto the floor but something else had caught my attention.
A tall man with short brown hair had stormed in. He had slight stubble on his chin and his brown eyes gleamed in the moonlight seeping in through the window. He wore black faded jeans and a leather jacket but his broad shoulders were noticeable along with his huge biceps.
He was extremely good looking and I probably should avoid men like him yet I couldn’t tears my eyes away as he approached the counter.
I saw him give his order to the old lady behind the till and with a nod she walked off.
Then his eyes looked around the place. It was fairly deserted with just me, an old man sleeping in the corner and another middle-aged lady who seemed to be sobbing into her hands.
His eyes found me and he smirked. He walked over but he seemed to be gliding soundlessly.
“Is it okay if I sit with you?” he asked in a deep, hollow voice. I shrugged and he took it as a yes. He shuffled into the seat opposite me and the old lady trotted over with his coffee and then disappeared in a flash.
I glanced over at him. His face was straight and perfect. When he smirked, I noticed a little dimple form on his right cheek. The minty smell that followed him cut through the coffee scent amidst the air. It was a nice change.
For a split second our eyes met but I quickly averted them to my cup. I picked it up and took a gulp; the man in front of me mirrored my actions.
“I’m Mark.” He introduced himself and held out his hand across the table. I reluctantly shook it and his strong hand firmly closed around mine. Despite that fact he walked in from outside, his hand was warm.
He withdrew and smiled at me, causing me to helplessly smile back.
“You have a lovely smile,” he complimented and sat back with a curious expression, “but I didn’t catch your name.”
“That’s because I didn’t tell you.” I reply dulled and bring my cup closer to me.
He chuckled slightly and nodded, grabbing his cup once again.
“So what is your name?” He purrs, leaning on the table and gazing at me with soft eyes. Instantly I was mesmerised byt his brown eyes with darker rims. I felt my mouth move on its own accord as I whispered “Anna.”
A grin broke out on his lips and I blinked several times to get back to reality.
“You look troubled.” He stated and I rolled my eyes.
“Do I now?” I ask sarcastically.
He dug his hand into his pocket and extracted and piece of paper and a pen. He scribbled something down and pushed it across the table to me. And without another word, he stood up, walked to the door and it shut behind him. My eyes flickered to the paper and there I saw a number and above it, it said “Call me.”
