CHAPTER
ONE
The Aptitude tests start after lunch and I’m terrified. What will the test show me? I’m scared that I won’t
get Abnegation, but I’m scared that I will.
I sit down at a table with Hailey on my left and Emily on my right.
“Tests.” Emily simply says.
“Yeah.” I reply.
“Excited?” Hailey asked.
“Yeah, but I’m nervous.” Only half of that was true.
The doors on the other side of the cafeteria open and a teacher walks to the center of the room. “The
tests will now start.” He says and reads out a few names. “Emmaline Neville, Emily Neville, Hailey Zack,”
I look at my sister and best friend as we get up and walk in a line to a hallway that leads to ten doors. I
stand at one with Emily and Hailey on each side of me. The door opens and I look at them and smile
before taking a breath and walking in. There are mirrors all around the room. I look at myself, my hair
is messy so I quickly take it out and put it back up in a tight ponytail.
I turn around and see a woman looking at me. “Never met a Abnegation that looks at her reflection
before.” She says as she turns and types something in the computer.
“Yeah, well we’re supposed to reject vanity, but...”
“But you don’t?”
“But I just don’t reject it as much as others in Abnegation.”
“Hmm, sit down.” I walk over to a chair and sit. “Name?”
“Um, Emmaline Neville.”
“My name’s Tori and I’ll be doing your test.” She grabs a vial of blue liquid. “Drink this.”
“Why?”
“Just drink it.”
“But what’s going to happen?”
“I can’t tell you that. Drink.” She says and looks at the computer.
I tip the liquid down my throat and my eyelids get heavy. They flutter closed.
~~~~~~~~
I open my eyes and Tori and the computer are gone. There are more mirrors now. I get up and walk to a
mirror.
I can’t see the chair anymore in the reflection. I turn around and it’s not there. “What...” Suddenly I am
tapped on the shoulder and I hear a familiar voice. My voice. “Choose.” It says. I turn and it’s me.
“Why?” I ask.
“Just choose!” She shouts, pointing to two bowls that hold a slice of cheese and a knife.
“WHY?! What will happen?” I reply.
“Fine, have it your way.” She smirks and disappears.
“What?” I suddenly hear a growl and spin round. There’s a huge ugly dog wolf thing growling at me. I
gasp. I try to run but I’m frozen. It comes closer. And closer. And closer. I drop to my knees without
warning and the dog turns into a cute puppy.
I see a girl in the corner of my eye. “Puppy!” She smiles. I look up and gasp. It’s Phoebe, except she
might be maybe, six or seven years old. The dog turns back into a beast and Phoebe turns and runs
as fast as she can. The dog is gaining on her. I jump on the dog but I fall through the floor.
~~~~~~~~
I jolt up and breathing heavily. My heart is beating wildly every milli-second.
Tori looks shocked. “Come with me.” She says as she drags me out of the chair.
“What? What’s wrong? What’s my results?”
“Your results...”
“What? What about them?”
“Your results- Abnegation,”
I let out a breath.
“And Dauntless and Erudite.”
“What? Abnegation? Dauntless? Erud- Mmm!” She shoves her hand over my mouth.
“Be quiet!” She takes her hand off.
“Huh?”
“Your results were inconclusive.” She whispers.
“What?”
“You don’t fit into one faction, you it into three, and possibly more.” I gasp.
“But that’s impossible!”
“Not impossible- just extremely rare.”
“Oh.”
“They call it Divergent. You can’t be controlled. They can’t control you or stick you into little boxes like
the others.”
“Divergent?” I whisper under my breath.
“You are a threat to them.”
“Who’s them?”
“Society. Mostly Erudite though. You can’t tell anyone. Not your parents, friends, siblings, anyone.
You hear me?"
“Why?”
“Why? Because if you don’t keep it a secret, they’ll kill you..”
I gasp. She deletes the footage of my test on the computer and types in ABNEGATION.
“Now go, they’ll be suspicious. And tell your parents that the serum made you sick and I sent you home.
I’ll tell your sister and friend.”
“Okay.” She opens the back door and pushes me out. She closes it and I walk away.
