Chapter One

Rogue's hearing was within normal limits but for some reason, most kids at Bayville High didn't seem to think so.

"Please, who does she think she is with that hair, some kind of Lady Gaga wannabe?"

That was Tish, the head cheerleader. The two girls with her laughed as though it was the funniest thing that they'd ever heard.

"Yeah, like anyone would date that!"

Getting a rise out of Rogue seemed to be a common pastime at Bayville, but Rogue just wasn't in the mood to react today. It was her own fault really, for getting her hopes up that a guy might actually like her. Homecoming was coming up and everyone seemed to be pairing up, except Rogue. So when David approached her, she couldn't help but hope that maybe he was going to ask her.

In her head she knew that was completely improbable, after all, he was on the football team and one of the most popular guys in school. What would a guy like him want with her? But he had faked a reason to talk to her (borrowing her history notes) then he continued to chat after she'd given them to him, had asked her if she was going to the game that night, then he had asked if he could ask her a question.

Her heart had skipped a beat that maybe for once, she wouldn't be the loner, either going to a dance stag or more likley, not going at all.

"Sure," she answered, with what she hoped was a warm smile.

"I was wondering, if, um, well, you know the Homecoming dance is coming up, right?"

Her heart had skipped another beat. He was going to ask her!

"Yeah?"

"Well I was wondering if, uh, well, are you going with anyone?"

This couldn't be happening to her! She was finally going to have a date to one of these stupid dances. And okay, maybe David wasn't the brightest bulb in the box, but he was popular. Maybe some of those cheerleader bitches would lay off her for a while.

"I don't know yet, why?"

"Well, I just wanted to know, because if you were going with someone... I was going to offer him my condolences!"

From around the corner had come a group of his football buddies and cheerleaders, all laughing their asses off at Rogue's shame.

Rogue's heart had pounded in her chest and her cheeks reddened. She couldn't believe that she'd been taken in. How could she be so stupid?

"Well I thank you for your concern, David, but who I'm taking is none of your business!" she snatched her history notes from his hand and strode off down the hall.

She had kept her head held high for the rest of the day, refusing to acknowledge the laughs that followed her. The weekend was another story though. As soon as she got home, she went to the Danger Room to run a sim and work out her anger but once her anger was gone, the pain flooded in. She knew that she was an undatable girl, so why did she keep hoping? Who in their right mind would want her? No one, that was who, and the sooner she got used to that fact, the better off she'd be.

But it still stung.

"Rogue, don't listen to them." Kitty's voice brought her back to the present.

"I'm trying not to, Kitty, but they're awful loud about it."

Of course the whole mansion knew about her humiliation, it was all over the school after all, and even the loser mutants heard tell of the tale. No one had said anything directly, but everyone had been super nice and kind, which Rogue hated. It just served as a reminded of why she was upset and did nothing to cheer her up at all.
