"A brother...?"
Jun asked, slowly.
I nodded, ecstasy flooding me. Just the knowledge that he was out there somewhere...it made everything feel better. Someone who knew who I was, about my parents, the world already a less scary place.
"It's says here his name is Liwei" I shoved the notebook at Jun. If he was 7 then...
"He would be 13 now" I couldn't contain the happiness consuming me.
"I can't wait to see him! I wonder where he is..Jun?"
Jun was looking into space, a slight frown on his face. He seemed completely trapped in his own thoughts. I waved a hand in front of his face. He flinched as if he had been hit.
"Are you okay, Jun?"
He wasn't. I could tell straight away. The way he smiled, like it took every muscle fibre in his body to. It didn't reach his eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine..."
"You can tell me anything, you know that right?" I said gently.
He nodded, the movement sending golden dust motes flying through the air.
"I guess...you'll be wanting to find him them?" He seemed strangely....hesitant. Shaking it off as my imagination, I grinned.
"Yes of course! As soon as possible, maybe I'll remember everything when I see him!"
Possibilities raced through my mind and it took all my willpower not to jump for joy. Jun was staring at me.
"What?" I asked, suddenly self conscious.
A gentle smile crept across his face, lighting up his eyes.
"You should smile more, Hao, it suits you"
I felt my eyes widen with shock, I hadn't expected him to say that. I opened my mouth several times, trying to think of a response. In the end I just mumbled "You're so greasy, Jun"
I heard his low chuckle reverberate around the room. Shaking my head, I reached for the door handle only to feel a sudden force pull me back by my arm.
I turned. My breath caught in my throat as I found Jun's face inches from mine. Seeing him this close, less than 10 centimetres away, his beauty was overwhelmimg. I clenched my fists, trying to stop my hands from reaching up to trace those breathtaking features. Jun was staring intensely into my eyes, I felt drawn into the dark pools of his eyes. You could drown in his gaze.
"Are you sure you want to do this, Hao? What if you don't like what you find?"
His words caught me off guard. I hadn't thought about that. Doubt crept through me, what if my past wasn't one I wanted. What if this amnesia was secretly my saviour? Who's to say I hadn't chosen to be like this?
No.
This IS what I wanted. I was desperate to discover every miniscule detail about my life, this was the only way I could think of. I would take a painful past over emptiness. I was convinced it would fill the void burning inside of me. I took a breath, the air filling my lungs until it felt like they would burst.
Be brave, Minghao.
"This is what I want, no I need this, Jun, I know you don't understand but please, I have to see my brother."
Jun's expression was unreadable but I could almost see the thoughts going through his mind flash past his eyes. He nodded eventually. Suddenly he lifted his hand up, using a slender finger to push a piece of my hair that had been straying across my forehead. A smile traced his lips. My heart stopped.
