"You gotta get a grip on your love life, man." Sam declared.
It had been a month since Blaine split from Karofsky. And honestly, he felt great. He was on fall break and had taken the time to visit friends in Lima. "Yeah, I know."
Blaine was sitting on a bench in the weight room at McKinley. Sam had just gotten the position as the assistant coach of the football team and had invited Blaine to come lift with him after practice.
Blaine let out a relieved grunt as he put the dumbbells he was using back on the rack.
Sam slid the weight disks off the 45 lb. bar he had been using for hang clean. "Have you talked with Kurt recently?"
Blaine stopped in his tracks. He felt his fingers curl into fists. "No. I don't really want to." He turned to face Sam.
His friend still had weights to put away, but had stopped and sat on the nearest bench. His expression was one of disappointment. "Why did you cut off contact with him? Why couldn't you've stayed friends?"
Blaine sat on the floor next to Sam. "We were freaking engaged, Sam. Do you know how hard it is to split from your fiancé?!"
Sam sighed. "No, but still--"
"Still what?!" Blaine asked, but didn't really want an answer so he went on, "Kurt an I's engagement was just some adolescent fantasy, it wasn't real."
Sam laughed slightly, causing Blaine to turn and give him a glare. "The chemistry between you guys was strong from the very beginning. You two understood each other better than any of us did with our girlfriends or boyfriends. I was really surprised when you split... We all were." he focused his eyes on an old poster that had been in the weight room ever since their high school days. It read Pain is Temporary!
How true that was. Blaine thought sarcastically.
There was silence for awhile before Sam spoke again. "Why Karofsky?"
Blaine thought this through. He had been in Karofsky's same kindergarten class. Then he never heard of Karofsky again until he met Kurt. Karofsky was a bull-headed bully. Blaine had never seen someone so broken until he met Kurt, and it was because if Karofsky's threats.
But Karofsky was gay. That's what confused Blaine. Why would someone hiding that their gay torment another gay person? It didn't make sense at first, but then it did.
Karofsky was a coward. Blaine didn't blame him for that cowardice. Karofsky knew he would be outcast if he "came out". So instead he covered his identity up so much that he became a tormentor of his own identity. It angered Blaine and it also made him love Kurt more and more for being strong when Blaine would've been weak.
So Blaine devoted the remainder of his high school years to loving Kurt and supporting him with all his heart and soul. They were kindred spirits. Soul mates.
By his senior year Blaine knew Kurt was his otp, his bae. So he proposed and it was wonderful.
They were happily engaged for a year, but not much wedding planning occurred. Both were so busy with NYADA and starting their adult lives.
Then things changed. Kurt made it into his first musical, playing Boq in Wicked. Blaine still performed in bars every weekend.
Rachel, Sam, and Mercedes moved out and they lost contact with Santana and Artie. The loneliness they felt should have brought them closer together, but actually they grew farther and farther apart.
Then, Karofsky showed up. Blaine saw him again at a diner where he was performing.
Kurt was out again with his friends from the Wicked cast. One of them was also gay and Blaine was starting to have suspicions.
So when Blaine finished his shift he went over and reacquainted with Karofsky. They had a great conversation and Blaine had a little too much to drink. He felt happier then he had ever felt in months. Karofsky took him to the hotel where he was staying and their spark was ignited.
Blaine shrugged casually. "I don't know why I chose him. It's just that... it's just that he was there when Kurt wasn't."
Sam raised a brow. "Dude! Kurt was there the whole darn time! It's just like every other time you two have split! You get selfish, you make assumptions, you cheat, you fight, and you break up." Sam gripped the edge of the bench. "When will you open your eyes and see the way that your horizons have always met. When will you understand that both of you are at fault?"
Blaine stood up. He was done. "Can we stop and just lift some more? I don't wanna think about it."
"Okay." Sam whispered. "I still don't like your decision."

After two months of living a single life Blaine couldn't take it anymore. So he ran back to Karofsky. Both made up and made out and all was back to the way it was. He never thought about Kurt until after graduation. Until after he got a job as the Dalton Warbler's coach.
