01 - being spontaneous and sleepy partners

Cora was raised to be quiet but not unheard.

This started at the age of five, she had the tendency to look around and notice everything around her but never actually say anything. Her deep brown eyes would remember the scene around her, the problems going on but her voice would never speak up on it. She was quiet and unheard of.

Cora's loud mother took matters into her own hands before their nightly bedtime story, unlike her older brothers, Cora liked to be read to by their mother and not their father. The older woman had a way of making the story come to life and make Cora feel at peace as their father only knew how to get every riled up despite his quiet nature.

That night was different because instead of getting right into 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar', Susanne Shires stayed quiet as she stroked her only daughter's hair. Cora had been laying under her butterfly covers when Susanne explained the entire problem of being a quiet bystander rather than a heard leader.

That was the one memory that stuck with Cora for the rest of her life, she never let her quiet nature come before her voice and right to be heard. If she didn't like something then she spoke up about it despite how uncomfortable she felt, the being heard aspect played a real role in Cora being honest with her feelings.

Cora's problem was that she was too honest with her feelings and only knew how to break her own heart before anything could truly start. She only knew how to be heard rather than closed off and quiet.

The many boys that Cora chased didn't break her heart, she did that herself.

The extroverted introvert female walked through the halls with a bright smile, energetic steps, and a loud voice that fought against how everything truly was in her mind. She seemed as if she was the bubbly brunette that everyone knew but if anything she just wished to be left alone with her broken heart.

"Good morning, gals!" Cora's cheery voice greeted not giving away any kind of fakeness or discomfort, the two girls she was speaking to remained completely oblivious to the practiced routine Cora let out.

"How are you so chipper every single morning?" Ashley questioned taking small sips from her coffee that she didn't necessarily like but wanted to grow a taste for, Marla, on the other hand, stood going through her phone with tea in her cup instead, she heard something about tea getting rid of stress.

Cora just let out a shrug as she kept smiling away at classmates around her, three days into school and everyone was already dead like. The school aura felt as if they had all been there for three months and hadn't had a short week in a very long time, that didn't faze the persona that Cora seemed to give off.

"Why not? We are in this big school with plenty of opportunities to do whatever we want! I could join any club without any thought right now." Cora brightly mentioned not seeing the look Marla and Ashley gave one another.

"Really? You could join any club without a thought?" Marla asked, the group already walking away from the lockers straight towards the club board not that Cora noticed.

"Yes because we are living for another great day where we can do whatever we want!"

Ashley and Marla both knew what their friend was doing, she always went on tangents about doing whatever with this chipper voice but never actually did it. She didn't necessarily chicken out, she just changed the subject and never actually went forward with it, not yet at least.

"Then sign up for the glee club." Ashley pointed at the nearly blank sign up sheet, it only had mocking names from cruel high schoolers. Neither of them knew the image that the glee club had, they were only freshmen after all.

Cora didn't know what it was but she felt bold and making a point to her friends, this was their year, high school was meant for new opportunities. She carefully wrote her name despite the small shake she was beginning to get in her hands, the last 'S' was a little wobbly but still there.

Marla smiled brightly and squeezed her friend's shoulder, this was a big step in making this year completely theirs. The first bell of the day went off signaling for them all to separate and go to class.

The usual bright-eyed girl walked into Personal Finance with a small smile, her smile would be a little wider if she wasn't the only underclassmen in the class. She hadn't really heard any mean comments just stuck being completely ignored even by her assigned partner.

"Good morning, Ms. Harris." Cora greeted the older woman, her born to be polite traits coming through. Ms. Harris greeted the girl in return before going back to writing on the whiteboard.

Cora took her seat in the back with her partner, Colton, who just kept sleeping as usual not that she actually cared, his grade not hers. She expected being ignored, she was only in there for the elective credits and understanding of paying bills that could really help her one day.

The bell went off again signaling that class has started, everyone was already sitting by the time Ms. Harris started her greetings. It was all going well until Noah Puckerman and Finn Hudson started pushing each other in a joking matter, they were best friends after all.

"You guys can do that out of class." Ms. Harris stated moving to on with the class agenda, it was all going well until Noah and Finn began bickering like a married couple. Cora and others found it very entertaining but their elective teacher didn't agree.

"Since you can't handle being together, I have to separate you two. Mr. Puckerman, you can take Mr. Larson's spot as he takes yours." Ms. Harris explained pointing for Noah to move until Cora quietly raised her hand.

"Yes, Ms. Shires?" Everyone turned to look at her but that didn't stop her or make her flustered, she didn't mind the attention.

"Colton's out cold, he's already drooling on the desk," Cora explained turning to the sleeping boy with disgust, he wasn't an attractive sleeper.

Ms. Harris let out a small sigh trying to make up her mind until she came up with a different solution, "Alright then Ms. Shires, you will come sit next to Mr. Hudson while Mr. Puckerman will take your spot."

Cora nodded putting her notebook back in her bag and stood up moving towards the middle spot where Finn Hudson was sitting with a confused expression, he didn't know who she was. He knew everyone in the class except for her.

Class started again with Ms. Harris explaining their plans for the day, Cora expected for her new partner to ignore her but that didn't happen. Finn looked over at her with a small smile, he saluted her with his pen making her smile as well.

He mouthed a greeting of a simple 'hey' to which she smiled even wider and mouthed back, the little partnership between them was already going well. Cora was already thanking sleepy Colton in her head for giving her the opportunity to sit next to a cute junior.

This was her year.
