03 | SIGN - "Doubts spreading in a way we can't stop, hiding a secret, your sign sign sign"

"Wait so you're the founder's son? I'm having ties with a famous person's son?" I exclaimed while scanning Asher's figure from top to bottom.

"You can say that again. To tell you the truth, I'm honored to know someone like me too." He chuckled as he popped a fry into his mouth. "I mean, what's so good about knowing me anyway?"

"Um, the fact that your father is the owner of the biggest law firm in the state, and don't forget about the whole senator part. You got some perks with your hotshot daddy."
Wiggling my eyebrows at him, I pulled my head back to concentrate on my Literature book.

"God! Just stop studying so hard and loosen up. I came here to get to know you, not to be your Lit tutor" Asher shoved my book aside and placed my lunch in front of me.

I groaned loudly after he mentioned a tutor. "Please, don't get me started about the whole tutor situation." He quizzically raised his right eyebrow, appearing clueless about the rumors. "Anne Baker. The affair with her French tutor. Cheating on the quarterback. She baked her way into the Frenchie's pants."

"You mean her?" Asher pointed his finger at a girl two tables behind us. I wouldn't know if she was that infamous Baker but she stood up to her name. Her plate was elegantly towered up with baked goods. French baked goods, to be exact.
Flipping her straight strawberry blonde hair aside, she hooked her arm around a bulky jock's arm and picked up a piece of bread with raisins.

"Maybe. I have heard about her but never seen her. I'm the new kid, remember? Hey, who's that guy next to her?"

"That's Jason, the school's quarterback. Duh."

I leaned back in my chair in shock. "What? Didn't she cheat on him? She's eating French pastries for heaven's sake! Isn't that enough of a hint?"

Asher turned his head to look at me. His hand enveloped mine and squeezed gently. "Calm down Peyton. It's none of our business. Let them deal with their issues. Now eat your food. Lunch finishes in five."

His hand enveloped mine and it might sound stupid but I've developed a tiny crush on him. He was already so caring and unlike all others here, Asher was the one who approached me. My eyes gazed at his and I felt like time stopped. His thumb caressed my skin as his lips adorned a sparkling smile. He leaned towards me and urged me to eat while I nodded my head hastily in agreement.

After Asher noticed that there was nothing left on my plate that can represent a club sandwich, he grinned triumphantly as he picked my books as his own and walked up to me.

"Why did you even bring books today? We're not learning anything. It's student orientation day." Asher stated as he eyed me.
I stood up from my seat, snatched my books from his grasp, and walked ahead of him. "It's not my fault that the principal isn't my father."
He tagged behind me whilst chuckling lowly.

Before lunch, Asher showed all aspects of the school deemed necessary; classrooms, the auditorium, the gymnasium, the open-air theater. He also dropped the reason why there was no induction ceremony held today. I also found out that there were no lessons done today. Again, the school's head ain't my dad. "Hold my father hostage for it. He had senator duties as always."

The cafeteria was what enticed me the most. Although Asher poked me for just ordering a club sandwich for lunch when there were so many choices, I shrugged with a hard kick to his shin. "Did that answer all your questions, your highness?"
His pained expression said it all.
