(Continued after the excerpt)
At first I thought that she wasn't well and started to move towards her but the sound of nearing footsteps kept me rooted on my place. The woman lifted her gaze as a man came into view. He must be roughly in his late twenties, wearing a dark blue Armani suit, keeping his face as hard as lead and taking confident strides towards her.
"Ah! Tara, you came", he said as he came to a halt in front of her.
" Of course I came. You wanted to meet me, " replied the woman whose name I now learned.
"I heard your conversation with Jay, just so you know."
Hearing this all the colour drained from her face. All the previous traces of confidence gone.
"What conversation are you taking about ?" There was a slight shiver in her voice as if already knowing the answer.
"The one in which you were talking about what you and Jay did to Mia."
Tara was almost pale by now and was breathing hard.
"You see, it was a bit confusing to see someone so agitated, so restless after spending a day with your friends. Then you and Jay sneaking guilty glances at her funeral. I was too drained emotionally to think about it then. And then I heard you talking with Jay. I didn't wanted to believe it at first....but now that I think about it, the signs were very clear. Now what do you have to say for yourself ?"
There was a beat of silence; and then she spoke,
"S....so you know. For how long have you known this?" She asked in a trembling voice."That does not matter. What matters," he stepped closer to her, "is why you did that to me and to your best friend. You took my life, my happiness, my everything from me."
Tara shook her head. "I can't tell you. We are sorry that this happened. We never meant any of this to happen. Please forgive us, " she said as tears fell from her eyes.
"Oh but sorry is not going to bring her back, is it?" He said as more tears fell from her eyes.
"I am going to bring her justice. I'll not stop till I see you and Jay paying for what you did." And saying this he spun on his heels and started walking towards the exit to the garden."Zakir no please don't do this!" Tara cried after him, but he kept walking.
I stood there trying to make sense of what just happened when I saw Tara reach into her pocket and take out.....a gun! All the innocence and fear present on her face turned blank as she raised the gun and pointed at Zakir.
And then before I could shout a warning at him she pulled the trigger.
