CHAPTER 9- NOT TOUGH ENOUGH

                                                              MAISY'S P.O.V

He came walking towards the water in his boxers and I quickly swam away, trying not to show anything. If I knew he was going to come into the water as well, I would have kept my underwear on. I went a few inches more into the water so nothing was seen.

He dipped his head into the water as well and resurfaced after a few seconds. He looked straight into my eyes and I couldn’t look away, it was like he had me hypnotized, frozen in place. He slowly started to swim closer to me and I swam back.

I swam back; until my back hit a rock and he had me trapped. What was going on with him? He never acted like this since we got lost.

“What are you doing?” I asked as he swam closer until he was about 30 cm’s away from me.

“Nothing.” He replied. Nothing? This wasn’t nothing. Just as he came closer, I moved to my left and got out of his way and swam away from him. I turned around in the water and saw him looking at me still.

“Turn around and don’t look.” I said and he turned around whilst smirking. I quickly got out of the water and got dressed. I started to walk back to the village when I heard splashes of water and Eugene shouting for me to wait.

“Maisy!” He called out but I continued to walk. "I'm sorry!"

“Mais-“ He shouted again but stopped in the middle of the sentence and then I heard a loud thump. I turned around to see Eugene sprawled out on the floor, only wearing his jeans that were unbuttoned.

I quickly ran to him and kneeled beside him and shook his shoulders, in panic. “Eugene!” I said, trying to get him up.

“Somebody help!” I shouted and a few seconds later, men from the village came running and lifted Eugene up from his underarms and legs.

They carried him to the village and put him in our hut. Laritza came in running asking me what was wrong and I told her what had happened and she quickly sat next to Eugene trying to find out what was wrong with him when an old lady came in, dressed up in all different coloured materials. She sat next to Eugene as well and touched his neck.

“She is the healer of the village, just arrived now.” Laritza whispered in my ear and I nodded. I kneeled next to the lady and saw her prodding Eugene. “Do you know what’s wrong with him?” I asked her and she nodded. After she was done examining him, she turned to me.

“Nothing serious, just fainted because he is not used to living here. Give him some more herbs and he should be fine. I don’t know why you haven’t fainted yet.” She said and then walked out of the hut. I was confused, why had it affected Eugene but not me? I wasn’t complaining but what made me immune to it?

I turned back to Eugene and sat crossed leg next to him. We have to get out of here, the people here are so nice but the environment isn’t for us. I looked down at his face and traced my thumb on his cheekbones. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t acting like him self at the waterfall.

I put the blanket over him tightly and then got out of the hut to go and find Laritza. I looked to my left and saw her talking to the Chief, her husband. I didn’t want to disturb so I went back in the hut and saw that Eugene was waking up slowly. I quickly sat by his side and helped him sit up.

“What happened?” He asked.

“Well, you’re not as tough as you seem.” I told him smirking, not trying to show him that I cared much more than I should for him. He gave me a glare and I started to laugh.
