Chapter one:
Ellie’s P.O.V
I sat in the corner of my dimly-lit room, staring out the dirty, old window. Down Below, there were cars rushing past, causing murky rainwater to splash onto the cracked sidewalks, giving them a look like it just rained. Absent-mindedly, I chewed on the end of my pencil as I looked out the window for any ideas on what to draw.
Suddenly, I heard heavy stomping coming closer and closer to my room, and without a warning my door was whipped open and there stood the one and only Ms.Haden. Now, how do I put this in a good way...Ms.Haden is our stinky, terrible, fat, huge, gross Cook, who has the ability to cook like a three year old! Marvelous, right?
To get my attention, Ms.Haden banged her foot down on the concrete floor, causing me to look up, putting on an innocent smile. Gosh, she looked even more terrible today. As usual, she was wearing her black maid's suit, that reached her knees, and you could just make out some unshaved legs. Her face was full of sweat and her black, scary hair was coming out of her net. And...well she had neck flubber everywhere. Horrifying, right?
"Eat." She ordered, placing a plate of who-knows-what on my desk beside me. Without waiting for my reply, she stomped out the room, leaving me alone again.
Hesitantly, I got up and looked at the food. It was some weird slob that Ms.Haden made, and it had bits of brown...something in it. I huffed. I'd much rather starve than eat that! Looks like I'll be stealing food from the kitchen again. I picked up the plate of slob and opened my window, tossing the food out without even looking if anyone was underneath. I guess I realized I should've when I heard a loud splat noise and lots of swearing followed by it.
I backed away from the window before anyone could see me and looked at my reflection in the cracked mirror, quickly pulling my brunette, curly hair into a messy ponytail and hurrying out of the room to fetch some food from the kitchen.
Cracking my door open, just a little, I checked to make sure there were no adults around, before stepping out, and slowly shutting the door. I looked around my surroundings, it really was like a haunted house. No matter how much our janitors tried, they could never get the dusty smell out or reach the cobwebs on the ceilings. Let's just say Rundle Orphanage is special.
I quietly walked down the hall and down the creaky stairs. No one was out since it was "Room Time" and that's when everyone has to stay in their rooms, and not come out. In my words, this is a perfect time for all the staff to have some alcohol and get drunk out of their minds...imagine Ms.Haden drunk. Not a pretty sight.
Just when I reached the last step, I jumped over it, that step was the creaky one that makes really loud noises and always gave you away on a secret food mission. I've lived here for more than half of my life, I have all the best hiding places, secret food places, all that jazz memorized. I'm so cool.
I silently walked down the left hallway and reached the living room, where I could hear loud laughter and people talking random rubbish. I took the urge to have a peek inside. The first person I saw was Ms.Haden, who could obviously be picked out by her large figure, no offense to her. Then I saw Ms.Parkinson, our janitor who is quite skinny and has the wildest red hair you could have ever seen. Beside Ms.Parkinson was her husband, Mr.Parkinson, or as he liked to be called, Joe. Joe was basically my only friend, even though he was in his 60s or something, he was the nicest man around. He'd buy me whatever I wanted and we would have some occasional chats now and then, when he's not working.
Ms.Parkinson's loud laugh interrupted me from my thoughts, and I quickly tip toed away from the loud living room. I walked down the dusty corridor and came to a stop as I reached the kitchen. I peeked in carefully, making sure no one was in there before walking in. Making my way to the fridge, I quickly decided in my head I could survive with an apple for the day. Just as I opened it, I heard footsteps coming down the hall. Oh no, trouble coming. Panickingly I looked around the kitchen for someplace to hide. My eyes settled on the storage closet and I quickly opened the door and locked myself in there.
