"So, here are the keys to those rooms. I don't have enough for everyone to have a room to themselves so you'll have to double up and one room will need to have three in there," Granny says handing Emma the keys.
"No they won't. They'll only need to double up. Peter can share with me," I chime in without looking at Pan. Granny gives me a stern look before turning and heading down the stairs. I suppress a smirk as I know what she means by it.
"Well, if you want to take it from here Kyla?" Emma asks. I nod and Emma hands the keys to me before walking off down the hall. She glances back at me with a smile before heading out of sight down the stairs.
"Okay boys, pair up," I say lightly as most of them look very weary and shaken up which worries me. I haven't had the chance to talk to them yet as our main priority was getting them something to eat and wear as well as a place to stay.
All the boys pair up and I hand one person in each pair a key and give them a direction of where their room is located. They can go to them later but for now, we all need to catch up. I can catch up with Peter later. I need to make sure our boys are okay first.
"Alright boys. Follow me," I say turning on my heels and following Emma's vacant trail. Peter walks beside me, taking my hand in his and allowing me to lead both him and our boys to where ever it is I am going.
It's dark out so I'm not going to take them back into the forest nor am I taking them anywhere near where Will could be. And all the boys must be famish so I'm going to take them somewhere they can get a good feed.
We wander out of the building with the boys trailing closely behind us and huddled closely together. They all so very frighten which worries me deeply. I let it rest for now. My questions can wait for later.
The lights of Granny's Diner are bright in the distance and I tell the boys that is where we are heading. I almost tell the to go ahead so I can have a moment with Peter but now is not the time to be selfish.
This is a strange world and they need me now. There was a time when I relied on them to look out for me in a strange world. Now it's time to repay the favor. There is so much about this world that I'm still learning and don't understand but I hope that I can at least make this easier for them.
I escort them inside and see that the place is already busy. I walk up to the counter to talk to Granny, who only left us ten minutes ago.
"Sorry hun, we're full up tonight. Maybe come back in an hour or so and I'll reserve a booth for ya," she says as she bustles around making coffees. Her granddaughter Red and her are both flat out with running out meals and drinks so I don't want to be a bother.
"Oh that's OK. We just wanted to get something to go, anyway," I say, though that wasn't my intention at all. "The boys are all exhausted and I want to get them settled in. Can I grab a bunch of sandwiches to go?"
She smiles and nods at me before rushing off. I walk over to the boys and tell them to wait out the front for me. They do as they're asked, except for Peter who has refused to leave my side since finding each other again. And I don't really blame him.
We find two spare seats next to each other at the counter and take them before someone else does. The lights in the diner are blindingly bright compared to the darkness outside but it's alright. It's much brighter than any candle or some magic energy ball so it works well. Although, I still don't quiet understand how these 'lights' work.
Electricity is a foreign concept to me and I don't think anyone else around here really understand it either but they all pretend they do. Everyone here, I've noticed, seems really good at pretending that they fully comprehend this world however many of them still seem confused at times.
