Maeda Umi was especially excited today. She was finally 5 years old. She couldn't think of a better birthday gift to ask for than to be enrolled in the academy!
Becoming a shinobi was something she'd always dreamed about.
-
"No. I will not repeat myself."
"But, tou-chan wh-"
"I said I will not repeat myself. Now hurry up and eat dinner. Your mother has made your favourite food."
She hung her head, dejectedly and was quiet throughout dinner.
That night Umi cried herself to sleep.
-
It wasn't like her father didn't love her. Infact, he loved her too much. She was his only daughter, his darling daughter.
He woke her up gently the next morning.
"Umi, sorry for being harsh with you yesterday. But we both know why you can't be a shinobi. You have to take care of the shop after I'm gone. Honey, I deal with these dangerous weapons everyday and I can't bare the thought of you falling in harm's way because of one."
She looked down, frowning.
"I know...""And moreover, what if you get hurt? You're my only child, darling. Your mother and I are very concerned about your safety. Being a shinobi means risking your life on missions and we can't bare to see you hurt even the slightest."
"I understand tou-chan.", She attempted to smile.
"I'm leaving for the shop now. Wash up, eat your breakfast and come there. You've been wanting to help me out one day, haven't you? Bye sweetheart.", Her father kissed her forehead and left the room.
Umi was a good girl. Obedient, soft-spoken, hardworking and never asked for anything.
She did as her father asked her to and arrived at the shop.
They had a quaint little shop of shinobi weaponry in the middle of Konoha.
-
"Tou-chan, are these real kunais?"
"Yes, dear but be very careful handling them."
"Yes tou-chan! Woahhh! Are these shurikens?"
-
As time passed, Umi learnt how to handle the shop. Sometimes, she would take care of the shop even when her father wasn't around.
Umi was now 12 years old and she had made some friends.
They used to hangout at the shop often, gossiping about things that little girls gossip about.
One afternoon, Umi, Saeko and Tsubaki were lounging about the shop as usual when the new hot topic was brought up.
"Sasuke Uchiha! Oh my gosh, that boy! Have you seen him girls? He is so cute!", Tsubaki was being her dramatic self.
"Of course...Sasuke is so dreamy. And he's such a strong and talented shinobi! All the girls like him, we have too much competition!", Saeko cribbed.
Umi didn't say much but nodded in agreement.
The conversation carried on about who all could make it to the list of the cutest boys in Konoha and such.
Suddenly, the door chimed, signalling a customer had walked in.
Tsubaki and Saeko quietened down, mildly interested in seeing who it was, that had interrupted their juicy conversation.
then, he walked in.
