chapter 1

it was a warm march day when the moving trucks pulled up to the two story house. autry reynolds and her parents following closely behind.

when the reynolds' family stopped the car in their new yard, autry climbed out and looked around.

"autry, sweetie, go into the house and pick out a room. you can have any room on the second floor." mr. reynolds said to her.

autry ran up the driveway and into the house.

upon walking in the house, she began to sneeze, the smell of old house and dust made her allergies act up.

she looked around for a few more seconds and began to walk up the stairs, but stopped as she heard running upstairs.

she shrugged, "must be the wind or something." she mumbled to herself. she continued her walk upstairs and looked in each and every room, before getting to the last one which she decided was the biggest and decided she wanted it.

she walked all the way in and noticed it had two closets and a bathroom.

as she began to walk out of the room, she almost ran into her father. "what color do you want to paint it?"

"yellow."

"well, how about i give you $50 and you run to the paint store and get some yellow paint and you can paint it."

"i don't know where the paint store is."

"well i just met the neighbors and they have a son your age and he offered to show you around."

autry nodded and took the money from her father and walked downstairs. sure enough, a boy with thick black glasses stood at the door, talking to mrs. reynolds.

"richard, this is my daughter, autry. autry, this is richard."

"you can call me richie." he said, smiling.

"nice to meet you." autry said.

"okay autry, you need to be back before dark."

"yes ma'am. see you later, love you!" with thar, autry walked out of the house, richie following behind her.

richie walked across the yard and picked up his bike and patted on the back, signaling for autry to get on.

"so what made you move to derry?" richie asked as he pedaled down the street.

"my parents are lawyers. they got offers at some big law firm in the some big town about 20 minutes from derry. but they thought derry would be a nice quiet town so they wanted to move here."

richie snorted, "this town isn't quiet."

"what do you mean?" autry asked.

"well, there's been a bunch of kids gone missing, my best friends little brother went missing."

"oh. i'm sorry."

"it's okay. bill still has hope that georgie will show up."

a few minutes later richie pedaled up to the paint store. autry climbed off the bike and began to walk in. richie walked in behind her. 

"so what color are you painting your room?" richie asked.

"i said pastel yellow at first, but now i kind of want to do light blue for the room and pastel yellow for the bathroom." autry said, looking around.

about 30 minutes later, the two teens walked out and got back on the bike.

richie began to bike around town to show her some important places.

"this is the middle school, i'm in eighth grade so this is where i go."

"oh that's where i'll be going to then."

"and then this is the diner. my friends are probably in there, i was supposed to meet with them, but instead i decided to show you around."

"oh you didn't have to do that."

"i wanted to." richie looked at his watch, "well actually, we said we'd meet up at 5:30. it's just now 5:35. if you wanna come in and meet them, you can."

"sure!" autry exclaimed.

they then got off the bike and richie threw it onto the ground by his friends bikes.

richie opened the door for autry and then they walked in.

he walked to he and his friends usual booth and motioned for autry to slide in.

all the boys were staring at autry, one thought was going through all of the boys minds, surely richie didn't get a girlfriend.

"hey guys. this is autry. she just moved here today, i was showing her around town." richie said as he scooted into the booth beside autry.

"autry, this is bill, eddie and stan."

"nice to meet you." autry said, with a small grin.

"you moved here just in time, tomorrow is the start of spring break!" richie exclaimed.

"you guys get spring break?!" autry questioned.

"did your old school not?" stan asked.

"no." autry said.

about an hour later, they all got up to leave, autry had a great time. after they paid their ticket, the five teens walked outside. "we're going to the quarry tomorrow autry. you should come." stan said.

"okay. i'll see if i can." autry said with a smile.
