That Monday, I waited in line with thousands of other hopefuls. I became increasingly nervous and anxious, wishing that Siobhan had come with me just to keep my nerves in check. They interviewed me and I told them that I wanted to be just as big as Beyonce and Justin Bieber, to whom I'd been compared to a few times, which I thought was okay. Siobhan always groaned and rolled her eyes anytime I sang one of his songs though. She wasn't exactly a fan of his. She wanted me to be more original and stick with my roots. She loved the classics, which I did as well but felt I needed to sing something more current. So I chose the Ne-Yo song "So Sick" which I knew she'd beat me up for because it wasn't the song we had agreed I should do but I changed my mind and she wasn't there to change it back.
When they told me I was next, my nerves really took hold. My mum pressed her hands on my cheeks, gave me a quick kiss, and said, "Today could be the start of it all. I love you."
"I know, mum. I love ya, too. Alright, game on!" I gave her a big hug and made my way to the stage.
The next several minutes of my life, I don't even remember. I know I sang the song, I know Simon stopped me in the middle of it and I thought for sure I was done, but somehow, someway, I got through! I jumped in the air as I heard Katy Perry, of all people, yell "Don't let us down!"
I ran off the stage and gave my family a big hug. I was so excited. It was the best day of my life! The only thing that could have made that day better is if she was there with me. I grabbed my phone and called her house but no one answered. She didn't have a cell phone of her own so I tried her dad's shop as well but still no answer. I decided to try again later.
My family and I went out to celebrate. I was given a whole bunch of information on when "bootcamp" would start and when and where I needed to be. All of that was starting on July 22, so I had three weeks to really prepare. It really was game on.
