"Ready for bed?" Rosé asked as Jisoo came out of the bathroom.
"Yup!" Jisoo smiled warmly. She and Rosé were rooming together like Jennie and Lisa were, so each pair was growing close. But they were still tired, despite being happy.
"Goodnight, Rosie!" Lisa squealed as she bounced over to Rosé and hugged her, then did the same with Jisoo. "Goodnight, Jisoo unnie!"
"Night!" Jennie called from the room.
Rosé turned off the light and closed the door so she and Jisoo could get into bed. Jennie did the same and one by one, they all fell asleep.
Then Jennie woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. As soon as she came out, though, she heard a tiny moan from one of the rooms.
"Jisoo unnie?" she whispered uncertainty. "Rosé? Lisa?"
The moan turned into a full cry and Jennie broke into a run from the bathroom back to the bedrooms. She checked her own room, but it wasn't Lisa, so she's turned to the one of the other two. The cries continued hard.
"What's going on?" she yelled, bursting into the room. Rosé was rubbing her eyes as she sat up in alarm.
Jisoo.
Throwing her legs over the side of the bed, Rosé stood up and rushed to Jisoo's side as Jennie did the same. Jisoo was practically screaming as she thrashed on the bed, clutching at her chest.
"Unnie!" Jennie gasped. "Oh my god..." She sat on the bed and grabbed Jisoo by the shoulders. "Jisoo, calm down!"
"No!!!" Jisoo wailed. "I can't! It hurts, it hurts!"
Lisa stumbled into the room as well, swallowing hard. "What is going on?"
"Something's wrong with Jisoo!" Rosé snapped back. "We need to call the hospital!"
Dashing back to her room, Lisa fetched her phone and called 911. Jennie was attempting to take Jisoo's hands away, but she wasn't letting her.
"Jisoo..." Jennie carefully took her into her arms and held her lashing body close. Jisoo was still crying, which was not good for them.
"Jisoo, don't..." Jennie leaned down and kissed Jisoo's forehead. "It's okay, I promise you it's okay."
"But it hurts!" Jisoo whimpered, tears pouring down her face.
"Why? Why does it hurt?"
"I don't know..." It broke Jennie's heart to see her like she was and she couldn't take it anymore.
"Jisoo, Jisoo, calm down... we're getting you to the hospital. You will be alright." What is wrong with her anyway? Rosé looked downright terrified.
"Shh..." Jennie leaned down and kissed Jisoo's forehead gently, which calmed her down a little, but she was still sobbing in her arms.
"She's in pain..." Lisa breathed to the medics on the phone. "I gave the address already, but she's in so much pain! We need help!"
Jisoo started coughing badly, which worried Jennie even more as she sat her up, brushing a hand over her body. Rosé was almost hysterical as well as she shied away from them.
Lisa kept up the hospital call until they got there and medics came scurrying up to their room. When they got up there, she moved out of the way and went to comfort Rosé, who did not look calm in any way. Jennie, however, was upset as the medics took Jisoo from her and she fell to her knees on the ground as she left, tears streaming down her face.
Next morning...
Jennie had barely slept. She was awake all night and only slept for about an hour. Her eyes were bloodshot and she could hardly stand. The medics had promised to call with the news of her, but it hadn't been done yet.
And it wasn't for a few days.
Then they did, telling them they had to come in to hear it. So that's what Jennie did, followed by Rosé and Lisa. They went to the hospital and asked for Jisoo. And as soon as they entered her room, Jennie recoiled sharply.
Poor Jisoo...
The girl in bed was deathly pale and her breathing was slightly labored, as if she'd been battling someone all night.
"Jisoo?" She stepped closer to her. "Are you okay? Please tell me you're okay!"
"She might be, she might not," a nurse added as she walked in. "I'm sorry to all of you, but... Kim Jisoo has cancer."
Jennie stumbled, her hands moving to her chest. "No. No way. This can't be possible. No way. Will she... will she be okay?"
The nurse didn't answer and Jennie took that to mean that she didn't know. But then she did. "We can only hope she will. The pain she's going through, however... it could kill her if she's exposed to it for too long."
Immediately, Jennie broke down.
"Jisoo unnie... this can't be happening! We were all fine last night! How did it happen?!"
"Shh, Jisoo's sleeping!" Rosé hissed. It was too late though. Jisoo woke up and her gaze landed right on Jennie. She sat up slowly, shaking a bit.
"What's going on?" She winced. "Ah..."
"You okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, just hurts a little... but what happened?"
"You don't know?" Jennie tilted her head to the side. "Jisoo, they diagnosed you..."
"With...?"
"Cancer. And if we are just seeing it now..."
Jisoo's eyes widened. "I can't... no... I can't be... dying...?"
"I don't know, I don't know, I don't know!" Jennie wailed. "I don't want you to. You're a part of me."
"And Rosé and Lisa too, they won't either..."
"Jisoo." Jennie cut her off. "I mean that you literally are. I can't let you leave me and I love you so much that it will hurt like hell if you have to."
"Jennie... really?"
"Jisoo... I promise... I will never leave your side. I will always be here, whether in spirit or in person."
Then Jennie leaned over and kissed her on the lips, much to the surprise of Jennie and Rosé. Jisoo wrapped an arm around Jennie's neck and pulled her closer, holding her to her own body as if it was the last touch either of them would ever experience. When she pulled away for a moment to breathe, Jisoo held on to her. Behind Jennie, she could see for a moment that Rosé and Lisa were crying at their affection. Both of them couldn't bear how sad they knew Jennie would be if Jisoo left them.
It hurt them all.
Jennie was the one who visited her every day after, kissing her every time as if it was their last.
And one day, it was their last.
That was the day Jennie came in and gave Jisoo another kiss and after she pulled away, Jisoo whispered, "I love you so much." She closed her eyes, looking like she was going to sleep and Rosé and Lisa both sighed from the door.
Feeling her heart melt, Jennie kissed Jisoo's forehead too. Then she froze.
She was cold.
And when an alarm went off, Jennie burst into tears, collapsing to the floor. She knew it was over.
She knew she had lost her Jisoo.
But soon, Rosé and Lisa knelt next to her and hugged her as hard as they could, softly rubbing her arms. She knew she had them, but it wasn't enough. Jisoo would never come back.
For the rest of her own life, Jennie was still laying flowers on Jisoo's casket for every birthday that should have been.
And the phrase on her tombstone, put there by Jennie, read, "I will never leave your side."
She didn't. She waited.
She waited for when they could be together again.
