The young woman mournfully looked out across the landscape.
This isn't how it was supposed to go.
That was her only thought.
Handong traversed the torn land with gentle care, noticing the people strewn across it like mines, blowing up at every other person they came across.
How has the world ended like this?
She passed by a familiar building, one that she remembered. It had changed so much during the dystopia that had erupted and now was in floating shambles.
A piece of it suddenly lost its floating ability and plummeted toward her.
Let it fall.
It missed her.
She just had to find her friends. The last thing she remembered before the dystopia of Korea had spread to the world was being with them.
Her friends.
JiU, Siyeon, SuA, Gahyeon, Dami, and Yoohyeon.
But they'd been separated. And she didn't know where she was now.
She saw bodies fall with every strike as soldiers and common people alike fought with each other. The night descended upon her as she moved on and she wished she didn't have to see the fire.
She did see it though.
Someone had set someone else on fire and it was horrifying. They ran through the street in terror and then tripped and sprawled in front of her.
Handong gasped.
Gahyeon?
Her friend's face was filled with terror and she screamed in as her body burned. She rolled on the ground to put it out.
"Gahyeon!"
Gahyeon's head jolted up, but Handong didn't think it was because she'd heard her. In fact, it definitely wasn't. A man nearby ran towards her, yanking a gun from the holster at his hip.
Handong was shocked as he fired at Gahyeon and shot her in the throat. She cried out as her friend fell, but the man didn't even glance at her.
What? Why didn't he fire at me?
Automatically, she ran. She felt ashamed for not staying to protect her, but she had to run, despite not being able to feel the ground under her due to the numbness in her legs.
Run. Just run!
Then she saw two others in front of her and skidded to a stop. A burning building stood behind the pair and both of them laid on the ground, skin singed badly.
She rushed over to them.
Dami! JiU! No!
"JiU..." Dami groaned. "It's okay... we'll be with them soon."
"But why... why did she have to leave?"
"I don't know... I wish Handong was with us though... and I wish we hadn't seen Yoohyeon and Siyeon leave us too..."
"I am! I'm here!" Handong yelled.
Neither of them answered and then Dami and JiU died together.
Handong's lip quivered as she realized most of her friends were gone. Gahyeon, JiU, Dami, and apparently Yoohyeon and Siyeon were gone as well.
SuA. I have to find SuA. She's the only one left...
"Are you looking for me?"
Handong turned in surprise. "SuA!"
"Handong, they're all gone. None of us are left."
"Wh- what? But you're here! And I am too!"
"Handong... you died in the beginning. You're not here, you're a ghost. Someone who can't let go. You and I been both been doomed to wander here. And soon, our friends will join us."
"I... I died?"
"Yes, Handong. You were the second, while I was the first. That is why they could not hear you. I saw Yoohyeon struck down by gunshots and Siyeon ripped into shreds. We saw them die after we'd died. It's over for us all."
"No..." Handong fell to her knees. "It can't be! We can't be dead!"
"Handong, you and I were the ones in front when the bullet storm broke out. There was never any future for us."
"No, no, no..." Handong pressed her face into her hands and started to weep.
SuA knelt and lifted Handong's chin. "Listen, they won't be able to let it go either. But we have to. We have to let go."
"But what if we can't?"
Swallowing, SuA looked her straight in the eye. "Then we are going to be ghosts stuck on this dystopian world forever, long after eternity has passed."
"I d- don't want that..."
SuA sighed and extended her hand. "I don't want it either. So let's find them. Let's find them and reunite."
"What about... the rest of the world?"
"Handong, there's nothing we can do for them now. I'm sorry, but... it's over."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." SuA pulled Handong up to her feet and cupped her face. "Hey, it's okay. Another world is waiting for us somewhere."
"Are you sure about that too?"
"Handong, we're ghosts. Once we let go... we can do anything. And I promise... we will all find each other again."
