when we arrived back home from the hospital, i was about to run to my room, but my mother stopped me. she grabbed me gently by the shoulders and pulled me in for a hug. no words were given nor received. just silence. she then let go, looked me in the eyes with her teary ones, and walked off to the kitchen.
i went to my room, and sat at my small desk chair. just staring at the thinly painted table, running my fingers along some of the chipped areas. i didn't feel like talking, i don't know why. i then turned my gaze to the window in front of me. looking out at the city street lights lighting up the way.
"goodnight, Ella." i heard her say from the other side of the door. i said nothing. i heard a small sigh then the sound of her retreating to her own room.
i thought it was time to go to bed, seeming as i couldn't stay at my desk the whole night. i got up, lie myself in between the covers of my duvet, and tried to fall into a deep sleep. letting all my troubles and worries go away...
but i was suddenly woken by a noise, it was almost a creaking noise. i looked in the direction of my closet, it was opened slightly. it was definitely shut when i first came in.
i just stared at the closet. not wanting to get up and look at what lays inside.
i grabbed my phone, and turned the flashlight app on. then pointed the light to the closet door.
there was someone there, or more like something. it wasn't the size of a human, too big. i then heard a small snap, and with that a small button came rolling out from the closet. it looked like a button to shirt of some sort.
the button came to a stop at the foot of my bed. i bent down to pick it up, examining it closely, it was an ordinary button. i then turned my gaze back to the closet to see now that the figure had emerged and was now in full view for me to see.
it was a giant bunny plush?
its size was around 7 feet at least, its ears were hanging loosely down, it had big buttons for eyes, and a small Lacey pink bow tie around its neck.
the thing i really couldn't keep my eyes was its mouth, it was all stitched up. what was this thing and what was it doing in my closet? how long has that been there?!
its stitched up lips curved into a small smile.
"hello there! i am Mr. Buttons! what might your name be?" he said cheerily.
i didn't say anything for a while, i mean, how could this be possible? a stuffed animal, talking to me? i had to be in a dream. but i had to be sure.
"Ella." i replied, still seeming unsure.
if it was even possible, his smile got even bigger.
nice to meet you Ella! i hope we can become close friends real soon!" he said in the same happy tone, laughing a bit at the end.
friends?
