it had been a few weeks since the accident happened, and the doctors said that i could go back to school. even though to be honest i didn't really want to.
i got up and started to get ready, rushing past Mr. Buttons left right and center. he watched my every move with that sharp teethed grin he would give, but i was too focused on not being late that i completely ignored him. after i was done i turned to him, wondering what i was going to do with him while i'm at school. "go off to school Ella, i'll be waiting here for you when you get back! Because that's what friends do!" he chirped, almost as if reading my thoughts. i nodded and ran out the door, looking up at my bedroom window to see him smiling, waving at me. i waved back and headed off.
i didn't dare look or admire any of the scenery, i didn't want to get distracted again.
as i approached the gates to the school, i noticed something, it caught my eye half peering out of the bush. my curiosity got the best of me and i went over to see. a small white rabbit with albino red eyes, decapitated, teared limb for limb and shoved in a bush. i felt like i knew that rabbit somewhere, and then it hit me. it looked like the same rabbit i saw that got me distracted the day of the accident! but, it cant be the same one.....right? horrified, i walked off into school, rushing to my class.
walking into class everyone would ignore me, continuing their small conversations, messing around, but oh no, not today. as soon as i stepped one foot into the small room, all eyes were on me, even the teacher was staring. i could hear a few of the students whisper things like, 'it's her' 'why is she here?' 'she got run over didn't she?' 'i thought she was dead'. everyone's trance was broken when the teacher spoke up. "welcome back Miss Ashton." and with that everyone went back to their work. jeez, i wasn't expecting that.
for the rest of the day i felt like someone was watching me, but every time i looked around to see who it was, all i saw where a bunch of kids in a classroom doing their work, it kinda put me on edge.
when it was time to go home, these two people started walking up to me. i recognized them from some of my classes. the taller one was Josh, and the slightly smaller one was Amy, they were siblings. "hey, Ella is it?" Amy asked me, to which i nodded. "you're the kid who almost died, right?" i nodded again, not saying a word. the taller boy then spoke up after having glanced at his sister in a threatening way. "sorry, i told her not to say that. i'm-" "Josh and she's Amy, yeah you're in my classes." i cut him off, laughing awkwardly. they smiled, "cool, well, we'll see you around Ella, eh?" Amy said and walked off with her brother.
did i just make a friend? no wait, two friends? god i forgot what it felt like, actually having a conversation with someone that isn't my mum or Mr. Buttons.......Mr. Buttons..... oh shit! he's waiting for me still, isn't he? i rushed back to my house and threw my bag in the corner, running up the stairs to my room.
i opened the door to see him sitting on my bed, he seemed, agitated. was it because i was a bit late? to my arrival he spun his head in my direction, his annoyed expression turned into his normal jolly one and jumped up to give me a hug.
"hey! i'm so sorry i'm late i-"
"who's Amy and Josh?" he cut me off my sentence. "oh, they're just...friends... i think?" he seemed to stiffen at my words. "you're replacing me?" i quickly shook my head, "no no no! their just classmates, your still my best and only friend!" he defiantly cheered up after that and grabbed something in my bed site table draw. he then pulled out three little notebooks and put them on my lap. "i did these for you while you were gone!" he smiled. oh wow, i was surprised at this, he did my science, maths and even English homework! "thanks Mr. Buttons!" i said and gave him another hug.
"we'll always be best friends forever, right Ella?" he said, piercing me with those button eyes of his, that to other people may not say a lot, but to me you could tell he could snap at any second with the wrong answer. i smiled,
"of course, you and me to the end."
