the next day at school, i hung around with Josh and Amy. they were actually really nice, and we had a lot in common.  we had just finished swimming, and went off to the changing rooms to dry off.

"so, do you live with your mum? or dad and mum? or...?" she asked, trailing off a bit at the end. "i live with only my mum, my dad did the old 'going to get milk' shit and the not coming back." i replied. "oh sorry about that." the next few seconds was silence until my small laughter broke it, she too started to laugh with me. man, i loved having a friend like this again.

when we were ready we started walking back to the locker to out our stuff away. "did you ever have any friends? or are me and Joshy your first?" you internally smirked at how she called him 'joshy', but then saddened, thinking about her again...should i even tell her? i mean, its really none of her business, but.... she is a really nice friend. i hesitated before replying, "well-"

i then stopped dead in my tracks when i arrived at my locker, the words, 'YOU PROMISED' spray painted in red was across the locker door. "oh god." Amy said, now looking where i was. who would do that?! did they understand how hard it is to get spray paint off a locker?! Amy then rushed off to get the teacher.

promise. promise. promise. the word was filling my head, where have i heard that before? my thoughts were interrupted by a small scrape sound coming from my locker. i slowly put my key in and opened it. and there sat a really squished Mr. Buttons. i was confused, but it all began to make sense now.

"Ella. you CAN'T break MY promises, OK?!" he sort of yelled/ said. "Buttons, what are you doing here at school? you're meant to be at home!? and what do you mean 'i broke a promise'? what did i do?!" i said utterly confused by all of this.

"i thought you said i was your best and only friend?" he said.

"you are!"

"why are you still hanging around with them then."

the realization hit you hard. he didn't like Amy nor josh at all. in fact, last night he almost had a melt down before you went to bed thinking that they were 'going to tear us apart'. "Buttons, we are friends and you are my best friend, but i'm aloud to have friends from school as well!"

before he could reply you saw Amy and your form teacher come in. you looked back at your locker and he was gone. you sighed and shut it.

"Miss Ashton, what on earth happened here?!" the teacher screeched.

"some assho-"

"i did it, i'm sorry, i was messing around with my spray cans and... yeah."

Amy looked at me in disbelief, while the teacher gave me a head shake of disapproval and told me not to do it again, to which i quickly responded with a small 'yes miss'. when she left Amy was still shocked.

"what was that all about?!" i ignored her, quickly grabbed my things and left. Amy was a really good friend, hell she reminds me a lot of myself, but Mr. Buttons was the first friend i had, well, the second but still. that's how a friendship works, right?

that night me and Mr. Buttons sat on the sofa and watched my series franchise i wanted to continue with, my mum wasn't home so it was alright. i looked up at him, his eyes were glued to the TV. i started to wonder how he even came to be, why did he want to be my friend and no one else's? i must of been staring for a while because he looked down at me with a questioning look, i quickly turned my head back to the TV.

tomorrow was Saturday, i'd have plenty of time to ask him then.
