The next morning Molly opened her eyes to her mother's harried voice in the other room. She was talking to Abigail's mother. The both sounded worried.
Jumping off the bed, she ran into the other room to face the women. Abigail's mother had dark circles under her eyes, and it looked like she had been crying.
"Mommy, what's going on?" asked Molly.
"Oh, sweetie, Abigail is missing. Her mommy has been all over the village asking all her friends if they have seen her this morning. Did she come by to see you last night?" asked Mommy.
"No, Mommy, I haven't seen her since her party last night," she answered.
At her reply, Abigail's mother broke down and cried.
"You were the last one of her friends that I have visited, and you all have said the same thing. I don't know what to do! I have asked everyone I can think of, and I need everyone's help to find her. Some people are checking the Village, others are checking by the streams. Would you help me too, Molly?" the woman asked.
"Yes! Sometimes Abigail and I go out with our friends into the woods. I can look in our special places for her," offers Molly.
"Oh! Thank you so much dear! I can't tell you how much that means to me!" she replied. At that, Abigail's mother turns and rushed out the door to go look for her friend.
"Mommy, I'm going to get dressed and then go look in the woods. I don't want Abby to be scared by herself!" said Molly.
"Alright, sweetheart. I will look around here, but I want you to be careful out there!" responded Mommy.
"I will!" she shouted over her shoulder as she dashed back into her room to change.
A few minutes later, after she put on her dress and shoes she ran out of her house toward the forest.
"Abby!" called Molly. "Abby, where are you?"
Molly searched and searched for her dear friend. She looked over by the large tree they like to climb. She looked by the thicket where all the animals like to hide. She looked over by the hollow log they like to have picnics by. She couldn't find her anywhere.
Just then, she turned around and saw an object on the far side of the meadow, but couldn't make out what it was. Curiosity getting the better of her, she took off toward the object.
When she got close enough, her breath caught. It was a doll. The most beautiful doll ever! She remembered this doll. It was the one Abby got from her Grandfather last night at her birthday party. She looked around, but no one was there.
"Abby! Where are you?" she called as loud as she could.
No one responded.
Abigail decided she didn't want the beautiful doll left out here all alone, so she would bring it back with her and keep it safe for Abigail, when she returned.
