I'm too far away for you to hear, but I wanted to know that I miss having you near.
This was the first thing in the Nike shoebox that had been under my bed, and only opened in my imagination. The note was held in a cream colored envelope, which I recognize as part of the stationary from his fathers office.
I clutch the note with trembling fingers, reading it over and over again until the words were scrambled around in my mind.
His voice played in my mind every time I read, and I feel my heart swelling in my chest.
We stare at the same moon, but I cannot guarantee that I will be home soon.
I think about you every day, but for now there is nothing left to say.
These were the only words on the paper, and I found myself thirsty for more. I flip over the note, hold it up to the light, but there was nothing. It was blank.
My eyes began to water, my arms and legs trembling with frustration. I'm not sure whether to be angry with him, or happy that he left me this piece of him.
But still, I wanted all of him.
Then, I remember. This was just one thing in the box.
And it is one thing out of many.
My favorite shirt of his, the light blue cotton one that always made his eyes stand out.
The rose he picked me on Valentine's Day, which was now flattened and browning, but more beautiful that ever.
The movie ticket from our first date.
The shoebox was filled with pictures and notes, trinkets and pins.
It took me a good hour of rummaging through the items to realize I was sobbing. The tears were streaming down my face and onto the items which made me cry even harder.
It was when I started putting things back into the box that I noticed something shiny. I saw it and froze, everything became slow motion as I reached my hand down into the box to pick out a plastic ring.
The ring was too big for my finger, like it had been before, which made me chuckle. I try to remember why I had given this back to him, why I didn't have it.
I decide that I have to remember the whole story, to find all the details.
