Chapter 19
Megan lay Rebecca down on her bed, kicking off her lace up boots, her jet black waves sliding forward from her shoulders to tickle Rebecca's face.
The soldier laced her arms around her lover's neck, pulling her closer, crushing her mouth into hers. Their lips whispered in synchronisation, the only sound in the otherwise quiet room. Megan tasted of strawberries and cigarettes, a taste that Rebecca's tongue had dearly missed.
Megan traced the contour of Rebecca's hip. Her breath caught, as her lover unfastened each button of her uniform, exposing Rebecca's lower abdomen. Megan kissed her once more, lips lingering on hers, as she traced small invisible circles across Rebecca's thigh.
The soldier gasped, arching her head back. Megan's fingers created a steady rhythm, plummeting her into the great abyss. She was lost.
Rebecca opened her eyes. The white ceiling gave little indication as to her location. Desperate for an answer, she glanced around at her surroundings. A cannula stuck out from her hand, and a half-empty drip hung from the hook beside her bed. A monitor beeped steadily, its green line rising and falling in mountain peaks.
She was in hospital.
She sat up, almost screaming as pain rippled across her chest. She clenched her eyes shut, releasing a tense breath through gritted teeth.
"Take it easy," A familiar masculine voice reassured her. "You're not invincible, Bec."
Cameron's ice blue eyes glistened with grave concern. Rebecca immediately glanced around the room for Megan, only to be disappointed. He was the only one in here.
"Where's Megan?"
His thick dark eyebrows drew together. "She's dead, like she has been for the past five years Rebecca."
She shook her head, willing his words to erase from her ears. He had been there, he had seen her! He had been just as confused as Rebecca had been, seeing Megan alive and moving.
"I saw her!" Rebecca exclaimed, frantic eyes scanning the hall outside the open door. All the people that passed were either nurses or doctors. "She's alive!"
Cameron stood from the chair beside her bed, raking a hand through his dark brown hair. "Rebecca," he sighed. "My sister is dead. You took a pretty massive blow to your abdomen. Well, your whole body really, but especially your abdomen. You probably just hallucinated her, while you were unconscious."
Rebecca shook her head, covering her ears. She knew she was acting petulant, but she had seen Megan - alive and breathing - right in front of her! For whatever reason, she was alive again.
"Honey, she's gone."
Glenn appeared in her line of vision, sinking into the chair a metre apart from Cameron's. He was dressed in a black t-shirt and blue jeans, his navy blue apron still clinging to his muscular frame. His hair was tied back into a short ponytail, and beads of sweat glistened across his forehead in the artifical lights.
"I saw her!"
"You think you saw her," her father interjected coolly, his posture remaining utterly still. "We were there, Becca. We know what actually happened."
She licked her dry lips, swallowing against her sand dry throat. She gazed around the room, for any sign of water.
"Here," Glenn poured water from a plastic jug, handing her the ice cold blue plastic cup. After she took a few long, grateful sips, he continued. "Bec, we thought you'd died. The explosion from the grenade you threw caused extensive damage. The whole site erupted, and..." he paused, swallowing hard. His knuckles turned white, as he clenched his fists in his lap. "A jagged piece of timber, from one of the dorms, was impaled through your chest."
