Chapter 17
A pair of fascinated baby blue eyes gazed down at Cameron as he awoke from his slumber. Her medium brown waves spilled over either side of her face and shoulders, glistening in a river of luscious perfection.
Cameron reached up, combing his fingers gently through Rebecca's hair. As he did, she leaned over and pressed her lips to his, enveloping him once more like a fly in a spider's web, into an alternate universe of their own where they were the only two humans alive. He had never felt like this about anyone before - not even Rachael, though their relationship had lasted merely a month.
"What time is it?" He yawned, rubbing at his eyes. It was still dark out. The full moon hung high in the black sky, casting ghostly white illumination across the wooden floorboards.
Rebecca flipped her hair over one shoulder, taking a momentary glance at her Samsung. "Eleven thirty."
Cameron blinked hard, attempting to sharpen his focus. Three hours had passed since their love making, and for Cameron, his first time. He had known Rebecca had been fairly intimate with his sister, but none of that mattered anymore. All that mattered was her.
She propped herself up on one elbow, cocking her head to one side at him. "You were amazing, for a virgin."
He made a futile attempt to resist smiling, but his face ended up splitting with a massive, goofy grin. He launched himself on top of her, attacking every vulnerable part of her body with his fingers. She squealed and squirmed beneath him, attempting to escape his tickles, but he pinned her down firmly.
A loud shot rang out, startling them apart. Rebecca sprung up from the mattress like a meerkat sensing danger, and hauled the door to the dormitory open. Cameron staggered over to her side while pulling on his camo pants, flicking his own fringe from his eyes.
The sky was alight with fire. Explosion after explosion rippled across the vast black entity, followed by the almost defeaning sound of choppers. He stood frozen with fear, his mind drawing a complete blank when he needed it the most right now. Foreign soldiers marched onto Military Minds soil, carrying with them loaded firearms of all sorts.
"You stupid little bitch!" Rowena's voice echoed through the field. "I thought you'd know better than to come here! This is my home, not yours! I was here before you!"
Cameron grasped Rebecca's elbow before she could run towards Rowena, all flailing limbs and burning anger. He pulled her bac firmly beside him, shutting the door.
"If you go out there, you'll only get yourself killed," he warned in a soft tone, meeting her timid and exasperated eyes. "Think this through, Rebecca, please. We have to come up with some sort of plan before we just launch into action. Megan did exactly that, and look where that got her."
Rebecca savagely pulled away from him, her eyes narrowing into slits. "Megan loved me!"
"And I love you!" Cameron bellowed, desperate to have his voice heard over the loud explosions outside the dormitory.
She froze, her shoulders dropping. She opened and closed her mouth a series of times. She couldn't think of anything to say in response to such a drastic and bold statement.
Cameron sighed, running a hand through his floppy brown hair, glistening with oil. It had grown to the bottom of his ears. "Rebecca, I've loved you ever since that night I knocked on your car window. I missed you, and after days of thinking about you, from when we first met at the reunion, I was excited to see you." He paused, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he swallowed. "I was drawn to you from the moment I saw you. At first it was because of Megan's past with you, and what she'd told me about you. I was intrigued, but from there on, my feelings only grew stronger. I breathe you; I think you; you consume every part of me. It worries me, because I have a feeling you don't feel that way about me. You shared something unique and rare with my sister, and I often think to myself, you can't love me, at all, because your heart lies with her."
