Her breathing was rhythmic. Her heartbeat slowed. Her body fell limp. And 3, 2, 1…

BLACKOUT

~10 years prior~

Her fists clenched tighter around her doll as she heard the door creak under the weight of heavy hands. Shaking slightly, she walked over and unlatched the door.

“Good evening,” the policeman started…

Their call was not unexpected for Marina. She brought them through to the dated living room and kept her stare fixed on the two officers as they all sat down. Just as she had rehearsed.

Her face rigid, she let out no emotion as the two officers spoke to her. They did not question her, although on one occasion they exchanged confused looks. Her mouth was dry, but no different than usual, and as she got up to lead them to the door, she could no longer compress the wild smile that their news had brought her.

Her mother had been murdered.
