AWAKE
When she roused herself she found herself lying in a crumpled heap on the hard, cold concrete a few metres from the now-closed diner. The sky was dark but as her eyes adjusted and she began to stand up, she noticed a purring cat sprawled across the pavement. Stunned by her wake and the queer evening light, she lifted her feet and began to walk across the street away from everything she knew. The night harboured unusual events and without looking back she surrendered herself to her impulses.
She arrived at the destination only half an hour later. The sun was almost down and a deep auburn glow surrounded the suburban nightmare around her.
The foul, pretentious building in front of her pulled every inch of life out of her as she stepped through the wide doorway. Her slim figure slipped through the gaudy high-ceilinged lobby with ease. Her mind was fuzzy but somewhere in her brain she found that the route to the office she was looking for was crystal clear.
Two flights of stairs on, suddenly the memories flooded back. Her head was tossed back and forth by each thought demanding to be heard first. Blinking hard, reality and dream merged into one and all she could attempt to do was scream to make it stop. Her whole body was numb and buckled beneath her. She couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t see. Because she now knew where she was and who she was here to see.
BLACKOUT
~3 years prior~
“Daddy, please, please stop!” tears flooded down Marina’s face. She screamed and cried but her father didn’t respond.
“DO NOT CALL ME THAT. I told you to leave and you wouldn’t listen, so now there is only one escape. Every part of your life was and is a failure. You stupid,” he kicked her body on the floor again. “Stupid,” blood now poured from her thin, weak body and mouth. “STUPID,”
Her eyes rolled back in her head and she let out a final sob. “STUPID COW!” he roared at her mutilated body lying in a pool of blood.
“Finally,” He said at last after staring at her for a long moment. “Finally, she is gone.” he whispered hoarsely as he walked away.
But she heard him.
